year away. I have chosen to take a gap year in order to travel and gain experiences from different places. In an ideal world, I would take a whole 12 months to travel the globe, collecting mem ories from different countries. I would visit Japan,' delving into - its colourful history, Russia, just to say I had been knee-deep in . snow and then I would road-trip around the USA in a VW Van! . However, I ’m sure you will agree, this world is far from ideal. -There are so many coun-, tr ies th a t need help, a n d ' although seeing the many sights the world has to offer would be a fantastic experience, I ’d rather spend my time doing something ■worthwhile. This realisation has caused me to pick'one place th a t ' I want to visit, bearing in mind

■ this decision will stay with me forever. I chose Sri Lanka, not because i t’s classed as the jewel. of the Indian Ocean, and quite rightly so, but because it is part of me. . Let me explain.. . At nine-days-old, I was adopt- , ed from Sri Lanka. For my birth

• parents, this was the only option, for several reasons. Putting me: up for adoption seemed like the best solution for them and for me. • -

■: My adoptive parents flew out

on the 18th of November. One day after, they saw me for the first time, a t a day old. I was brought back to England and have lived in East Lancashire

• ever since - the main part of my life in Burnley and then Chat- ' ’

■ bum.

I am lucky in so many ways. For one, I am in contact with

■my bir th parents and I have been back and visited them. I only remember seeing them for

■ the third time, at age 13.1 found the experience surreal. I t ’s one of those things th a t you can’t explain, but I recall wondering what I would have been like if I had stayed there. My life would have been unbelievably'differ ent. H in d i t amazing th a t a slight turn of events and I could have been someone else. .:

I have worked out that it will

cost me at least £1,200 for one' month in Sri Lanka. Although this figure is only an estimate, it ■ is a tall order. The money will go towards flights, which are rough ly £600 return. If I chose to go with a company, the package will be around £600 also. There are two aspects of vol

unteering I would like to do. At the moment,.! am still wonder ing which one to chose. ■ The first is to help teach the

English language to school chil dren. The ability to speak fluent Eiiglish is beneficial. Schools in the poorer parts of the country are in need of English speakers . to assist them. This is something that would tie in with my future aspirations to gain an English degree. However, there is anoth er situation th a t is in need of more help. The orphanages are crying out: :

for support. Since the tsunami of 2004, there are many children th a t have' lost families and homes. They simply'require love and

attention. However, lots of these children have physical and men tal problems because of the trau-' ma they went through. This means i t will-be an extremely emotionally intense month. ■ Spending time in Sri Lanka is ■

something I really want to do. I am determined to raise-the £1,200 th a t will enable me to volunteer in Sri Lanka, giving •me a brilliant experience. ■ For me, it’s an opportunity, to

give something back’to the country that despite being over 5,000 niiles away, I have such a close connection to. To do this is not only my goal, but my ambi tion.
