Professional Turner hits second century

PROFESSIONAL Paul Turner hit his second cen tury of the■season:as Clitheroe set up a thrilling Ramsbottom Cup quarter-; final derby at Ribblesdale Wanderers with a thump ing win at Cherry Tree. Neil Bolton’s side served:'

are among the early pace setters in third. But the men from Chat- burn Road upset the form

. book in style, with Turner . hitting a superb unbeaten 100 off 127 balls, including 12 fours and two maxi mum hits.

notice of their potential after a tricky opening in : ’ the league, winning by, eight wickets at Preston Old Road. ' Clitheroe had won only one of their opening five league fixtures, lyng third bottom in the table, while their Blackburn opponents

; The former East Lan cashire man had earlier hit 119 against Baxenden in Clitheroe’s only other win this season; and here he, received excellent support from the amateurs. • : Turner had earlier

claimed 2-64 off nine overs as Cherry Tree were .

restricted to 196-6 off their 48 overs, with Andrew Pearce and Jack Dewhurst also among the wickets, to add to two run outs. Dewhurst trapped opener

Ahmer Mirza for 13 at 29, and the rest of the top order provided solid contribu tions, with professional Saleem Mughal, who hit 44, helping put on 53 for the third wicket with skipper Mark Hadfield (25). ■ Joe Bolton top-scored

with 49, off just 41 balls, but Clitheroe felt the total of 196-6 was certainly attainable.

Much depended on

Turner, and he duly pro duced the goods, sharing 90 for the first wicket with Nick James, who played patiently for his 28 before being bowled by Andrea Sudnik. Peter Dibb added 26

before being caught behind off Nigel Robbins at 134, but Turner and Dewhurst, who crashed an unbeaten 35, saw the locals past the post for a terrific victory. On Saturday, Clitheroe

are at 'Whalley, before entertaining Read on Sun day.

Sensible batting seals important cup win

SENSIBLE batting helped Read to a seven- wicket win at Blackburn Northern in the Ramsbot tom Cup over the week end. In a game which

stretched into two days because of Saturday’s poor weather, Jon Har vey’s side eased past the Pleckgate side’s 228-8 mth 11 balls to spare. . The former Burnley pro

finished unbeaten on 81 - after Michael Whalley’s spirited 89 in Read’s run chase - having earlier claimed 3-54 off his 10 overs in Northern’s innings.

Blackburn won the toss

and decided to bat in cold conditions, for the time of year, with the innings anchored . , by Abdul

■ Bisoodwal, who was final ly bowled two short of his century by Harvey. , He received limited sup

port, with opener Lunat making 31, to add to 26 from Shahid and an unbeaten 28 from Mohammed Jamil. To add to Harvey’s

haul, Joe Marshall took 2- 20 off three overs, while Greg Smithson, Warren Eastham and Elliot Art- ingstoll claimed one wick-

etapiece. In reply. Read got off to

a flying start, scoring 10 off the first over, and when the sides came off for bad light, the locals stood at 63-1 after 18 overs, with Nick Marsh having been bowled by Bisoodwal for 20at59. Whalley and Harvey

occupied the crease, with 30 overs remaining on Sun day to knock off the win ning runs. , Taking no risks, the pair broke the back of the run chase, putting on 111 for the second wicket, taking the score to 170, before

Whalley .was trapped by Bisoodwal for a fine 89, coming off 108 balls, with nine fours and two sixes. Kyle O’Connor was run

out for a single, but Har vey and Marshall passed the target, Harvey’s unbeaten 81 coming off 83 balls, with nine fours and a six.

Marshall finished on 17

not-out, and Read now travel to Baxenden in the last eight on Sunday, June 22nd. On Saturday, Read are

at home to Blackburn Northern, before a trip to Clitheroe on Sunday.

Flying start! First defeat

THE Ribble Valley Under. 15s got their season off to a great start with a comfort able home win against Pre ston at Stonyhurst College. Put in to bat, the locals

were quickly up and run ning, with the opening pair of Gary Knight from Lon- gridge and Joe Hopkins from Ribblesdale batting superbly, taking quick sin-, gles and punishing the bad ball. : They had put on 93,

with Knight having passed his half-century, when Hopkins fell for a very good 31. Tim Le-Breton from

Clitheroe joined Knight ■ and made 11 in no time, but wont for one shot too- many and was trapped. Whalley player James

Taylor, together with Knight, made great strides and punished the Preston bowling. ■ Knight reached his cen

tury and rarely looked in troubie, and the pair scored almost 100 between them before Taylor fell for 36.

Jamie Gale from Lon-

gridge made a quickfire 25 to assist Knigbt, who was caught in the last over for a magnificent 146.: ’ The Valley side made a

massive 270-4 off their 45 overs, which was always going to be a tall order for Preston. Jack Houldsworth from

Clitheroe struck early, tak ing 2-11 in hb five overs. There was some joy for

Preston as Modesa scored a brisk 42 before he was run out, having been put under pressure following some fine bowling by Max Nelson from Longridge. : . James Scott from Clitheroe also bowled well. Using his height, he got the extra bounce that pro duced two caught behind victims for Gale. ’ '. > There was a wicket for

Clitheroe player Liam Nutlall and one for Joe Hopkins. Le-Breton fin

ished the match off with two wickets at the end. ' The locals ran out winners by a convincing 135 runs. .

CHATBURN lost top spot in the Mewies Solicitors Craven and District League Second Division with defeat to Haworth Road. :

- A late collapse saw them

lose this top-of-the-table clash by 89 runs, for their first defeat of the cam paign.

Batting first, Griggs

(82) and Rodwill (56) top- scored for Haworth Road in their total of 231-7. ■ Steve Bowker (4-53) and

Stephen Braithwaite (2- 49) were the Chatburn wicket takers. ; ^

, The home side then made a good start to their reply, with Mark Braith waite (39) and Henry Kay (35) putting on 83 for the first wcket.

. But it was all downhill

from there on, as only Paul Craig (29) entered double figures, with Chat burn collapsing to 142 all out. Meanwhile, the second

team suffered an agonising three-run defeat in the

Cowling Cup to Culling- worth.

Ashley Bennett (3-34),

Chris Mulhearn (2-50), Russell Braithwaite (2^50) and Geoff Lambert (1-49) were all in the wickets as their opponents posted 206-8.

, But in reply, despite an excellent opening partner ship between- Marc Holmes (69) and Rod Booth (17), and good con tributions from Steve- Bowker (38), Russell Braithwaite ■ (33) and Lambert (16), Chatburn were bowled out for 203. ' • The previous day, the league match at Pendle

Forest was abandoned due : to rain. ,

SABDEN CC travelled to Ribbles/j dale League outfit Salesbury on

Sunday in the third round of the National ■Village Knockout.

: ^

,, .At the 11th hour, Sabden were shorn of their Ribblesdale League players, who were called up for Ramsbottom Cup duty, and a weakened side took to the field. . Salesbury won the toss, elected to bat '

and amassed a huge 276-5 in their 40 overs, as Martin Yeoman picked up a cou-

ple of wickets. ; In reply, Sabden faced an uphill battle, and the task proved far too tricky. The reply started disastrously,

; opener Rick Wright holing out in the first over, and the innings never recovered. : Apart from a brief flurry between Paul McKenna and Chris Dunderdale (20), the innings petered away to a disappointing 55 all out.

Outstanding tournament

CLITHEROE stunned some mighty opposition to claim a remarkable second place in the invitation-only Manchester Hockey Tour nament. : The event was played on

.the international water- based hockey pitches at Belle Vue stadium, used by England to train and play international games and tournaments such as the Commonwealth Games, and, most recently, the 2007 men’s and women’s European Championships. First up for Clitheroe

were the very impressive Bowdon Hockey Club - one of the biggest clubs in the country with over 20 teams, and after a fantas tic team performance, Clitheroe lost out 1-0. ; Clitheroe.were encour

aged by their performance and were confident going into their next game against West Lynn. A breathtaking perform

ance set the tournament alive, with Clitheroe destroying West Lynn 9-0. The team could do no

wrong and played some, outstanding passing play. Clitheroe then took on

the might of Timperley, who featured a number of North Premier players. Clitheroe took the game to Timperley and pulled off

. an amazing 2-0 win. A sa result, Clitheroe

grew in confidence and were next up against last year’s winners. Sale. An end-to-end battle finished with the teams sharing the points in a 1-1 draw. At the halfway point,:

Clitheroe had recorded two wins, a draw and a defeat in a tournament were all they wanted to do was avoid coming last! Next up was the City of

Manchester club, and a confident Clitheroe, after another tight game, came away with a 2-0 win and three more points. With two games remain

ing, Clitheroe took on Runcorn, another club who were having a excel lent tournament. This turned out to be

one of the hardest games of the day, with both teams playing some powerful hockey, and again Clitheroe put in a strong performance and took all three points with a narrow 1-0 win. Last up for Clitheroe

were Sale B, and another fantastic team perform ance. finished , with Clitheroe hammering Sale, 7-0. : The presentation start

ed, and to the delight of Clitheroe, the team had finished second, only one point behind tournament winners Bowdon. This was an outstanding

tournament for the club and they really enjoyed the' wholeday.
