Woman reconciled with duped familj^
A CLITHEROE woman obtained a £9,500 loan using her step-father’s details despite the fact that her mother had sepa rated from him two years earlier. . ; Blackburn magistrates heard th a t
Charlotte Dibb (27) was already subject to a suspended sentence for fraud offences involving her mother and her sister. And while she was on bail for those offences she duped the parents of her best friend who had given her a'home after her mother threwherout.
: ■ , ^ ^ Dibb, pictured, of Bracken Hey, pleaded
guilty to dishonestly obtaining a money transfer from Egg Banking pic, stealing £1,000 cash from Elizabeth BirtweU, steal ing a cheque to the value of £1,000 from Elizabeth Birtwell and stealing £250 from Neil Birtwell. She was committed on hail to Preston Crown Court for sentence. Miss Catherine Allan (prosecuting) said
the offence-invoMng Dibb’s step-father, Anthony McGiven, went back to May 2006, but had only come to light when he was refused a mortgage because of his credit background. Mr McGiven coirld not understand why there was a problem and began to make his own inquiries.: ' ■ “These revealed that he was linked to an
address in Lord Street, Great Harwood, and there was a large debt against his name at that address,” said Miss TUlan. “He had never had anything to do with
that address, but found that it had also been used by Dibb in the fraud case involving her mother and sister. Mr McGiven was horrified to find that he was
: alleged to owe £13,700 and he couldn’t understand why the defendant had done this to him.” The offences involving Mrs Birtwell,
who was landlady of the 'White Horse pub in Clitheroe, and her husband occurred between January and August 2007. Dibb had been thrown out by her mother
■ because of the fraud committed against her and in Mrs Birtwell’s daughter asked if her friend could come and live with them a t the'White Horse. In January 2007 she told Mr and Mrs
. Birtwell she had been advised to invest in . 'V'odaphone shares. She said she was going to invest £1,000 and the Birtwells said they would do the same and handed over £1,000 in cash. “They trusted that she was taking care of their money,” said Miss Allan.
In February Dibb took a call in front of
them which she purported to be from her “adviser” saying the shares were going up and did they want some more. This time they wrote out a cheque for £1,000 made out to Dibb. . One of the couple’s other daughters
asked about share certificates and Dibb later produced two share certificates. She
. also did a deal with Neil Birtwell to sell him £500 worth of her shares for £250, which he handed over in cash. “They fully trusted her as one of their
own daughters and never asked for receipts,” said Miss Allan. “They eventu ally took the certificates to an accountant who said they were fraudulent, but even

then she did not give up the pretence.” Dibb gave the couple a 10-digit number
so they could look the shares up on the Internet, but it was rejected and she then gave them a mobile phone number.. “The man they spoke to said he had
never been involved in mobile phone shares,” said Miss Allan. “The defendant didn’t come home that day and hasn’t returned since.” Miss Rachel Adamson (defending) said
; .
the offence involving Mr McGiven could have been dealt with at the time of the Crown Court sentence had anyone been aware
of.it. She said during months of questioning Dibb had admitted every thing the police had put to her and there had been something Uke 75 offences to be taken into consideration. “If this matter had been put to her she
would have admitted it as well,” said Miss Adamson. “She lost track of what she had admitted to.” Miss Adamson said all the offences pre
dated the suspended prison sentence and that since then Dibb had turned her life around completely. “That is largely due to the fact she now
has a three-month-old baby,” said Miss Adamson. “Relationships with her family are completely mended and she is dealing with her debts. Everything in her life is beginning to fall into place.” Miss Adamson said as soon as the
offences involving the Birtwells had come to light Dibb had sold her car and . handed over £1,200 to them.
