the hearts of top city development

by Duncan Smith

CANDLES crafted by hand in a Ribble Valley village'will help ■ commemorate the opening of Europe’s biggest retail-led development. . Candle company “Melt”, based

at Backridge Farm, near Wadding- ton, has been approached by inter national property business Grosvenor - the global giant behind “Liverpool ONE”, - to produce a corporate gift in commemoration of their phase one opening last month. Liverpool ONE is a £1 billion

shopping, residential and leisure development spread over 42 acres in the heart of Liverpool city centre, led by urban property specialists Grosvenor.-, Built around the existing stru ts of Liverpool, the development wll

include more than 160 shops, plus cafes, restaurants and bars, two new hotels, a 14-screen Odeon cine ma, 600 apartments, parking for more than 3,000 cars and a five-acre park. Phase two is due for comple tion later this year, with a grand opening planned for September 30th. Cheryl Hook is the founder of

Melt, which began as a kitchen table hobby nine years ago. She said: “We were delighted to

receive the telephone call from the marketing company behind the launch - particularly as they had been specifically asked to contact us.

“We operate out of converted

barns on a.working farm from where we supply Melt candles to many stockists throughout the UK and Europe, but particularly across . Liverpool and Merseyside.

• AN amazing £800 was raised at a sum mer fair for vital repair work at St Mary’s Community Hall in Sabden. Games and lucky dips for youngsters and lots of stalls all helped to boost the fund-raising effort for the church hull repairs and refurbishment. Fr Peter Birmingham, parish priest of St Mary’s RC Church, said the fair had gone well despite a lower turnout than usual.

“This is why we were proud to be

asked to work -with Liverpool ONE to create a corporate gift for this event - and they were especially keen to keep some of , th e Melt branding alongside th e ir own, which is a fantastic opportunity for a small, local company like ours.” : Cheryl, who lives in Waddington,

added: “All Melt candles are made at Backridge Farm, which is start ing to thrive as a farm diversifica tion site. “We came here in 2001 and it was

not known if the farm would sur vive the foot and mouth outbreak, but the farmer diversified and cre ated extra space for our workshops so we did not have to move off site. “That diversification has led to

the opening of 20 businesses - most of -which are open to the public - which has allowed Backridge to continue as a working farm.’’
