Waggon’s derby win

Waddington . . . . ' . .1 WFC Clilheroe . . . .3

A GARY HicUing hat- trick gave WFC a fan tastic derby win. Both sides started

brightly, with the Twit ter Lane outfit having the better early chances, with Lloyd scuffing an early shot wide Good play from Stod-

dart and Chadwick in the middle of the Pimli co Road side’s midfield carved out a chance for Coulter, but his shot also went wide. A corner on 30 min

utes delivered by Chad wick saw debutant Waddington defender Tom Smith shove Hick- ling in the back, right under the referee’s nose, which resulted in a well- taken spot kick past goalkeeper Wayne Leech. Coulter, Curtis and

Mercer kept the Waddington centre for wards a t bay for the remainder of the halt, and WFC went in 1-0 up. In the second half,

Hickling doubled his tally as a pass from Hughes inside to Stod- dart was neatly thread ed through, and Hick- ling took the ball in his stride and lifted it over the goalkeeper. Waddington showed

much more effort going forward after the break but with no end product to show for their work disciplme was lost. It was 3-0 on 70 min

utes when a long cross field pass for Oakley saw Hickling again bring the ball down at the back post and rifle home. Waddington pulled a

goal back through Robert Lloyd, as keeper Simon Jarvis missed his punched clearance, and Lloyd headed into an empty net. However, Lloyd was

then booked, before see ing red seconds later for dissent. There could have

been more goals from the Clitheroe side, as Hargreaves and Coulter were both guilty of missed opportunities as they counter-attacked brilliantly. This victory should

hopefully set the Pimli co Road side up for another local derby on Saturday . against Clitheroe Lions. While Waddington

were left to reflect on the fact they need to secure a couple of wins to cement their position in the Craven League Premier Division. The return of Peter

Fletcher for the week end home game against Skipton LMS should be just the tonic required. 0 More football on

ClilheweRUFC........... 3 Furness........................23 IN an entertaining game, Clitheroe showed a gritty determination to ensure a very good side went away scoring only two tries. Within the first 10 min

utes, Furness had scored two penalties, but they were not to score again until 25 min utes in, when, with the Clitheroe scrum under pres sure on their own line, a clearing kick was executed by number eight Ollie McEntyre. Unfortunately, the kick

came off the outside of his boot and straight into the arms of a grateful Furness winger, who cut inside to score the game’s first try. Clitheroe were unfazed by

the scoreline, and rampaged back up the field with good drives from the tight for wards. They were backed up

admirably by the leaping salmon of a second row, Ralph Rigby, and the back row combination of McEn tyre, Curphy and Gooda When Dave Watson was

n’t deliberately getting in the way of the significantly- built Plimess fly half, he was showing deft handling to bring strong-running centre Alex Hough into positions that enabled him to bust through the Furness mid- field. This pressure eventually

told, and an infringement by the Furness back row gave a kickable penalty attempt to young Declan Rtzhenry. He duly slotted home the penal ty.

The second half proved to

be even tighter than the first. Matt Bartle, together with Watson, had a particu larly good game marshahing the defensive back line, and time after time Clitheroe repelled the powerful run ners from Barrow. At the 55-minute mark,

Rick Edmondson suffered a head injury and was forced to leave the field. The Clitheroe players

were not deterred, and defended stoutly all over the field. However, the pressure

eventually told, and the Furness outside centre showed good footwork and an exceptional line of run ning to beat a number of

game captain Tom Back house scorched around the entire Burnley backline to score under the posts and James Wilde converted to make it 7-0. Unfortunately for

defenders to the line Dan Smith was nominat

ed as the home side’s man- of-the-match, which was a deserved accolade for the plucky number nine. Saturday sees Clitheroe

travel to North Manchester. Kirkby Lonsdale........... 0 Clilheroe Cavaliers ....81 THE Cavaliers were able to field a strong team and man aged to romp in 13 tries against a mid-table team. The Cavaliers strength in

this match lay in the hands of their back line which wel comed Paul Callaghan, a Rugby League convert, into the fold. He slotted into the unit and provided plenty of ammunition for the for wards. The result was a brace of

tries on his debut but he did n’t just run straight and hard but also passed well. The first half saw full

back Keiron Keogh score a beautiful try but had to then receive treatment for a knee to the head. Tries were plentiful and i t .

was obvious at the interval that Kirkby could not recov er.

The second half proved to

be a try feast with scores from Bill Thatcher (2), Pete Farnsworth, Paul Wood- worth, Dave Fairhurst, Jacob Shorrock and man-of- the-match Ed Rigby (4). Thatcher also managed to

convert eight of the 13 to give the Cavaliers their largest scoring margin for as long as they could remem ber.

The previous weekend

they beat Colne and Nelson 36-13. Indiscipline allowed Colne

and Nelson to score two imconverted tries. That prompted the Cava liers to battle it out.

A line-out in the Colne

and Nelson 22 metre line saw Steve Dowson secure the ball which was taken on by Windy Rawstron who formed a wedge between the defence. The ball landed in the safe

hands of Bill Thatcher who took the credit for putting it over the whitewash. Fly half Declan converted

and Clitheroe were back in the game Just before half-time vet

eran and chairman Tubba Thornber managed to squeeze over the line to put the home team in front. From the kick-off both

Curphy and Newton made an immediate impact run ning fast and hard at the opposition catcher who pan icked and kicked the ball into touch. Quick thinking from full

back Brian Wood who took a quick line out which caught Colne and Nelson off guard and resulted in him going over the line. Clitheroe could sense a victory and played some champagne rugby with the forwards and backs linking well. Declan was made some great passes and good running lines were seen from Keogh and Rigby. The back row of Curphy

and Nick Goode saw territo ry eaten up with excellent support play from the backs. Tries came from a glorious run by centre Rigby who skirted around his opposite number to score under the posts. Curphy also showed that

he is getting back to match fitness with a bullocking run through the opposition to score in the comer. Burnley ...................... 15 Clilheroe Under 15s . . .21 A SUPERB win was the result of a great team per-

Clitheroe, things had to be changed round following a nasty-looking injury to scrum-half Will Spencely- Jones. Robbie Tabemer moved

from wing to scrum half and had to learn quickly to ensure Clitheroe produced good ball. The Burnley forwards

were much bulkier overall but this certainly didn’t faze the Clitheroe pack and the strong tackling'and defen sive work sho\vn by all was exemplified by James Kidd and Bradley ’Wright. The half finished 10-7 to

Burnley, with Clitheroe’s converted try being over shadowed by two Burnley tries, fashioned through their large fonvard pack. In the second half the

dominance in possession and territory that Burnley enjoyed was diminishing due to that growing belief with in the Clitheroe ranks. Francis Devine typified

the way in which the backs performed as he returned the ball on numerous occa sions deep into the Burnley half. This increasing domi

nance eventually told and Backhouse again displayed a quick turn of foot to out strip the defence from 50 metres out to take the score line to 12-10. Clitheroe were to also

make the next score when Seb Hemingway showed for- ward-like strength to power through a ruck on the Bum- ley line and score near to the posts. The kicking prop Wilde again converted to make the score 19-10. Burnley stormed back

through their forwards to score a try of their own and move to rvithin four points. However, Clitheroe were

not done and Wilde scooted over on the left following a period of sustained posses sion and duly converted his own try to make the final score 24-15 to Clitheroe.

Liam retains title

CLITHEROE table tennis player Liam Bedford retained his Under 19 Lancashire Schools’ title after adding the North West Colleges title to his growing list of accolades late last year. The 17-year-old St Mary’s College student successfully

saw off all before him at St Bede’s in Blackburn to repeat his efforts from last year, and will now represent Lan cashire at the national finals in Doncaster at the end of April. Last year, in Stoke-on-Trent, Bedford won a couple of

^ ~ I / •

matches, but couldn’t get past the group stages. This year he’s hoping to progress further, but he isn’t

getting ahead of himself as he knows he’ll be up against tbe top 10 players in England.

His next challenge however is a big tournament against

Lancashire and Cheshire opposition, in between his long term goal to win a scholarship to Edge Hill University or U C I l^ , before travelling to Loughborough at the begin ning,pj'April for the national colleges’ final. (T100208/5)

Aecringlon Slanley . . .0 Wolves Under 11s Red .3 TWO goals in the first five minutes of this game set the tone for this magnifi cent display, which saw the Wolves leapfrog Stanley at the top of the table. The first goal was

flicked in by Brandon Gar- side, with the second a tap in from Ryan Cattermole after a good break by Matthew Farnsworth. Cattermole added a

third in the second half. It was a great all round

performance, with the defensive trio of Scorer, Robson and McGrath pro viding a solid platform for the team. Colne............................3 Wolves Under 1 1 s ........ 1 THE steep slope of the Colne pitch allowed Wolves to dominate the first half and score first - only to be hit by three home goals. Pressure paid off follow

ing several near misses from Neil Sharma and Tom Jackson, when Tom Reede managed to slot the ball in the corner of the net. The second half was

much tougher, though, as Colne piled on the pres sure. However, despite some

spirited saves by keeper Jay Wardleworth, Wolves found themselves 2-1 down, and a last-minute penalty was harsh on Clitheroe. Man-of-the-match was

Tom Jackson. Wolves Under 8 s ..........5 Oswaldlwislle Rangers 0 THE young Wolves turned in another fine per formance against very determined opposition at Highmoor. Having played some

excellent passing football, it was just reward when the home side took the lead through Elliot Wat son, firing a powerful drive past the goalkeeper from 10 yards. Ewan Jackson put

Wolves further ahead at the s ta r t of the second period, with the goal of the game. A sweeping move

through midfield saw an inch-perfect pass release Jackson, who beat the keeper with a fine shot. Frankie Jackson then

made it three with a clini cal finish, and further goals from Will Lancaster and Elliot Watson gave Clitheroe a comprehensive victory. Wolves (NVL) Under 9s 2 WeslEndFC.................6 THE Wolves performed well against second-place West End. The locals were 3-0

down at half-time, but showed determination to fight back, with second half goals coming from William Pallister, on the end of a cross and then a corner, both of which were supplied by Alex Wilson.

Padiham S a in ls ......... 0 Langho Under 13s........../ JOE Corrigan produced another solid defensive per formance for Langho, in front of his hero, Burnley’s greatest player of all time, Jimmy Mcllroy, who made a guest appearance. Despite playing poorly,

two goals in each half were enough for Langho tqgfadk up victory. After an early strike from

Yusuf Dardouri, several good scoring opportunities were missed before Daniel Holden-Grimshaw rose above the defence to loop a superb header into the net from a William Paton free kick. In the second half, Hold

en-Grimshaw forced his way through the defence to score his second goal of the game. Edward James completed the scoring late on with a scrambled effort.

Readstone United

Readslone Uld Under 8s 7 PendleForesl ...............0 FOUR goals from Harry Rush ton and a strike apiece by Joe Noone, William Wrathall and man-of-the- match Aiden Duffey sealed this win. Readslone Uld Under 9s 2 Padiham S a in ls ...........1 AN excellent game of foot ball between two evenly- matched teams was edged by Readstone. Goals from man-of-the-match Lewis Simpson and a last-minute strike from Oliver Robinson secured the win, with special mention to Gareth Roberts and Owen Grice for their efforts. Trawden Cellic............ 6 Readslone Under 10s . . .0 UNITED suffered a disap pointing defeat against Trawden Celtic. Man-of- the-match was Oliver Dug- dale. Readslone Under 11s . . .6 Bacup ..........................0 MAN-of-the-match Denzel Yates scored a hat-trick in this cup win, with further goals from Adam He}'s, Drew Rushton and Aiden Ratcliffa

Riminglon Under 12s 12 Barrow ford Cellic . . . .1 KAY hit a double hat- trick as Rimington bounced back. Holmes opened the scor

ing early on, and further strikes from Kay, More and Maxim Petnaho saw the home side into a 4-0 half-time lead. Rimington contmued to

push forward, and Kay found his second wind as he gave the Barrowford defence a torrid time and added a further five goals to his total. Petriaho, M o r i^ ^ t l

Holmes all ended up^-l(h a brace in a solid all-round

team performance. Dewhurst made a mag

nificent save late on, diving to his right and tipping the ball round the post, but was finally beaten by the Barrowford attack for a consolation goal late on.

Jack is the star

SEVEN Clitheroe Dol-

■ phins swimmers took part in the North Lancashire Age Groups and Open Championships held at the Palatine Pool in Blackpool recently. A qualifying time was

necessary to enter this Level Two meet and all the swimmers excelled them selves with five achieving personal best times. Jack Dewhurst, who

also trains with the Gallica Squad, was outstanding as he achieved 11 personal bests and finished first in the 100m breaststroke. The 11-year-old also

took bronze in the 100m butterfly and fourth place in the 200m and 50m breaststroke. And in th a t exciting

50m breaststroke event, 11-year-old Harry Paige just managed to beat Jack by .08 of a second to take third place. Andrew Tomlinson,

swam a personal best time in the 10-year-old boys 50m breaststroke to finish fourth. Megan Horbury, Bethany Jones, William Murray and Ben Phillips also took part.

Locals win again

CLITHEROE A contin ued their winning streak when they played Multi part B in the Second Divi sion of the Mid-Lancs Badminton League. Graham Morris was on

top form, winning all his matches, ably aided by Christine Smitton in the mixed doubles, and Paul Cronshaw in the men’s doubles. Stephen Pym and

Louise Burrill battled well and defeated the top pair to see the locals win l2-6.
