first half, the Lions upped the tempo with Avci working hard to create chances for the strik ers.

And around the

hour mark, the breakthrough was finally made when a long ball from the excellent Gaz Kay was flicked on by Pinard to Holgate, who rattled the ball into the roof of the net with'some confi dence. Now it was the

turn of the home side to put pressure on the Lions’ goal, but full backs Bank and Jimmy Clegg coped well with the tricky Embsay wingers, and raan-of-the-match Rob Hamilton and central defensive partner Kay protect ed the away goalwell. With only seconds

left, there was a huge scare tor the locals when a punt upfield left the home striker one-on-pne with keeper Mashiter, and the ball took a wicked bounce away from both players, who.clattered into each other, with the keeper just managing punch the ball

Dog Sports B a r ................ ./ Dog In n .................................7

DOG Inn overcame a stubborn Dog Sports Bar at Roefield to book their place in the Terry Catter- mole Trophy semi-finals. The Ribble Valley teams

shared six goals in an action-packed first half, with Liam Porter, Ollie

McLean and 'Pom Eglin netting for the Whalley side. Two more McLean

efforts gave him his second club hat-trick and, even more importantlj', a two- goal lead, before Clitheroe’s Sports Bar scored again to set up a grandstand finish. However, Jamie Enefer

restored Dog Inn's two- goal advantage, before Eglin completed the scor ing in the last minute. Dog Inn manager

Simon Kerins was delight ed to reacli the semi-finals for the second-successive season, but knows his team will have to be more lethal in front of goal and tighter

at the back if they are to keep alive tlieir dream of glory at .<\ccrington Stan ley: "We played very well at times, l)ut in almost seven years as manager I cannot recall us missing so many sitters in one game. “We should have been

out of sight by half-time, but Dog Sports Bar

deserve great credit for plugging away. If they’d got the scores level at 5-5, I think I'd have had heart failure, but thankfully that didn't happen.” Dog Inn are back in

league action on Sunday, when they take on Great Harwood Rovers at Wil-

Tenth straight Chipping back win for Green on the win trail

Padiharn A ........................................0 Hurst G r e en .....................................2 A SEVERELY depleted Hurst Green side progressed to the sec ond round of the President’s Gup as another Danny Walker goal helped the side to a 10th succes sive victory. Hurst Green went to Padiham

without first team regulars as hol idays and injuries took a toll on the champions. Seedall (back) was replaced by

Ian Simpson, Oily Bolton came in for Phil Walker, Zac Foley started at right back in place of Danny Taylor and Alex Young came back into the side in place of Stuart Malley (knee). On a large, sticky pitch and in

Spring-like conditions the young home side made the better start . and forced Green onto the back foot. The back four of Bamber, Goupe, Tipton and Foley were put under early pressure but there were no shots of any significance. After this shaky spell, Green

began to get a foothold in the game but too often played down the middle on a wide pitch. Mark Young whipped in a few

dangerous crosses and it was from his delivery that Green took the lead. The cross was whipped in, Bolton dummied and WalW was on hand to force the ball home from close range. Hurst Green should have dou

bled their lead as a goalmouth scramble ensued after a Goupe close-range effort was blocked on the line, the away side just failing to find the net. The home keeper was then

forced into a great save from Bolton as the visitors tried to fin ish the game as a contest. However, Green did eventually

make it two when a Goupe through ball played Nicki Wilkin son in, whose shot was heavily deflected and looped over the keeper to give Hurst Green a two- goal advantage. The visitors spent most of the

second half camped inside their own half as a resurgent Padiham knocked the ball around tidily in front of the Green defence without really testing keeper Young. The clo.sest Padiham came to

scoring was when Foley and Bam ber failed to deal with a long ball, and the Padiham forward couldn’t make the most of the chance as Green scrambled back to clear their lines. Simpson and Walker both had

half chances late on to seal the win but the two first half goals were enough. Hurst Green travel to Stack-

steads St Joseph’s on Saturday in what is sure to be another tight contest, kick-off 2-15 p.m.

Chipping ...........................................3 Hoole U nited...................................2 GHIPPING got back to winning ways on Saturday with an excel lent performance. The home side completely dom

inated the opening half and led early through new signing Oily Hollis, who was too quick for the visiting defence as he latched on to a throughball and finished well. Ghipping should have been sev

eral goals up after good chances wore wasted, but Hoole managed to get back into the game with a rare foray into home territory which led to a very fortunate equaliser. The left winger picked up the

ball on the left, but badly over-hit an attempted cross, which flew over stand-in keeper Ryan McMurray and dropped into the net. This stroke of luck spurred

Chipping on, and the midfield pairing of Ben Rice and man-of- the-match Dave Barton fed count less balls through to the front two, finally leading to a golden chance. Following good work from 01

Hayhurst, Hollis beat the keeper to the ball, only to be crudely up ended. The usually deadly Mark Ford-

ham stepped up, only to see his well-struck penalty fly wide of the target.

, It did not take long for the vil

lagers to get another chance, and it was again from the penalty spot. Some good play down the left

led to an inexplicable hand ball by the full back, and this time Rice stepped up and slotted liome with ease. The second half began as the

first had ended, with Chipping dominating possession and creat ing numerous chances. Their failure to kill off teams

has been an issue all season, and it was no different here as again Hoole got an equaliser. From a period of pressure, a

Hoole midfielder fireiJ a specula tive effort from the edge of the box which nestled in the bottom cor ner. This led to Hoole’s best period

of the match, as they peppered the Chipping goal with efforts from range, but McMurray’s handling was first class as he kept them at bay. This provided the platform for

leading scorer Fordham to win the match for Chipping. Tim Rice found brother Ben

with a clever pass inside, and he curled an inch-perfect cross to the near post, where Fordham cleverly lost his marker to flick home a glo rious winner. Chipping have a tough test on

Saturday as they entertain New Longton (kick-off 2 p.m.).

Second string’s big cup victory

Peel Park Reserves....................... 2 Riminglon R e s e rv e s ..................3 DAUNTED by the biggest pitch in the league, and the fact that Peel Park trounced them 5-2 on it earlier in the season, Rimington knew this wasn’t going to be an easy cup tie. 'The script was written early

on as the villagers forced the pace of the game, but failed to capitalise. Needless to say, the home side

slotted a ball through the centre of defence with their first attack, and the striker scored at the second attempt, to the frustration of keeper Danny Anderson. Rimington looked far from last

year’s champions for majority of the first half. However, the persistent Sam

Johns got his reward on 35 min utes when a parried shot fell to him on the edge of the box, and he clinically finished.

Rimington continued to play

belowjTtheir usual standards, and concef^d a second goal seconds beforeShe break. . Witjfr^their defence in disarray, the striker was allowed time to slot home from a long ball. However an equaliser soon

materialised from Matt Garner in the second half. And with Johns creating

chances left, right and centre, Rimington finally took the lead

through man-of-the-match Gar ner.

The Rimington striker peeled

off and received a looping ball, which he clipped over the defender and then teed up to exquisitely volley past the keeper. Rimington threaten to score

again ,and should have had more, although Peel Park went close too. However, Anderson pulled off a

match-winning save to see Rim ington through.

Slacksleads ........... ] R im ih y lon ____ RIMINGTON came through a tough President’s Cup tie at Stacksteads thanks to first half goals, despite the absence of the influential Keigli- ley and Lawson. The visitors got off

to a nervous start , l)ut Tom O’Neill pro duced a typical left- foot strike from 25 yards, beating two men to clout the ball into the top corner. Kershaw had a

hand in the second goal, as his long kick was misjudged by the centre half, and, as he was pressured by Jon Penman, he succeed ed in helping the ball past his own keeper and into the net. Danny Paton then

provided Penman with a simple tap-in, as he unselfishly squared the ball for his partner to finish with ease. Riraington totally

dominated the first half, and had chances to extend their lead, particularly through the partnership of Penman and Paton, whose combination of power and pace will worry most defences in the league. S t a c k s t e a d s

changed formation at the start of the sec ond half and began to trouble Riming ton, as they grabbed a goal back inside 10 minutes. Kershaw had to be

at his best, pulling off two excellent saves, one from almost point-blank range to keep the lead intact. (ilen Dinsdale

replaced O’Neill and helped to stiffen up midfield, where Stacksteads had started to dominate, and the range of his passing led to some promising counter attacks via Paton and Penman, and efforts by Mankows- ki, McLean and Walmsley kept the home keeper busy. R i m i n. g t 0 n

deserved to go through, and showed excellent team spirit again when the chips were down. Manager Terry

Braithwaite is con vinced that sides will not want to draw his team if they continue in this form, but insists they concen trate on the league, as he sees that as the priority - starting at Kelbrobk on Satur day (kick-off 2-15 p.m.).
