A 27-YEAR-OLD man has appeared before Blackburn magistrates charged with the attempted fraudulent purchase of- a £30,000 BMW from a Gisburn luxu­ ry cardealer. David Uzoma Ezeanaka,


of Woodcote Road, Walling- ton, Surrey, allegedly gave a false name to gain credit for the purchase. Police were alerted and were waiting at the garage to arrest Ezeana­ ka when he went to collect the vehicle. ; The magistrates ordered


that his case should be dealt with at Preston Crown Court and he was remanded on bail pending the prepara­ tion of committal papers..

POLICE are investigating the theft of a quad bike valued at £5,000. The red quad was stolen from a farm in

A FORMER teacher in Gisburn and Grindle- ton,Mr Bill Birch has died, aged 92.'


• Born in Mayfield, near Ash­


bourne, Derbyshire, he won a scholarship to Ashbourne Grammar School, where, he was cricket captain and open­ ing bat for Derbyshire Schools. He went to Gold­ smiths College, London, to qualify as a teacher. Mr Birch, pictured right,.


had lived in Great Harwood for 60 years. His first teaching post was in Gisburn, where he met his future wife, Gertrude, ^ who worked at the Old Vic­ arage, where he lodged.


They married in 1938, but


were soon separated by the Second World War. Mr Birch joined the Royal Navy, where ■ he was at first a gunner on a ■ battleship and then a s ig - : naller/decoder on destroyers escorting convoys in th e ' Mediterranean on their runs r from Tripoli and Alexandria to besieged Tobruk. After the war, he returned


to Gisburn School and moved in 1949 as deputy head to Riversmead Secondary School, Grindleton (now Bow- land High School) teaching : PE and maths. He stayed until his retirement in 1975. He organised several good


football teams, one of which continues to have reunions to -which he was always invited. After his retirement he had many .visits from, former pupils. • - •• He had an amazing memory for each pupil he had taught and corresponded with many, following their careers with great interest. On many drives around the Rihble Valley with family, he would point out the homes of former pupils, remembering their names and. achievements. His wife, daughter Joyce,


and two sons, Richard and Tom, shared his love of ball games. •
