40 Clitheroe Advertiser STimes, Thursday, May 1st, 2008 Beware of
HOMEOWNERS in rural areas like the Ribble Valley are being warned to be vigilant after a surge in home heating oil thefts has left unlucky families out of pocket by hundreds of pounds. Several recent incidents have seen
thieves target quiet, rural communities, where many homes.have heating sys-; terns which run on fuel oil. The thieves siphon it from storage tanks outside, people's homes, leaving them with little or no fuel. Most victims have been com pletely unaware that anything was wrong until their heating stopped work ing because they had run out of oil. Operating in secluded areas or where
they can approach oil tanks in darkness or under the cover of trees, thieves have been getting their hands on an expen sive commodity. A recent rise in oil prices is thought to have led to the - increased number of thefts.: The Oil Firing Technical Association the body representing the oil is urging
(OFTEC) - heating and cooking industry -
homeowners
to.be vigilant. Here are OFTEC's top tips for pro
tecting your heating oil: 0 Check the level of fuel in your tank
regularly so that you are sure that none: has gone missing and you always know how much fuel you have. 0 Purchase a padlock for your tank.
Most tanks can be locked at the inspec tion cover. There are also lockable filler caps available that can be fitted to oil tanks.:
^ ■ 0 Install security lights that come on
wljen there is movement in the garden. This is a good deterrent to stop intrud ers in their tracks. V 0 Consider having a simple alarm
•system fitted. An inexpensive infra-red model will alert you if there is an intruder on your property and deter a thief. 0 Be vigilant. If there is a tanker lorry
or a suspicious vehicle in the area, spend a few moments thinking about what they are doing. Listen out for the sound of an electric pump coming from the vehicle because this is how thieves
will siphon fuel from the tank. .
0 If your tank is in a remote area, you
might consider having it moved to a more visible spot. Do not try and con ceal it with a fence or panels. This could be illegal and cause a fire hazard. Your oil technician can advise on current reg ulations.. 0 Consider installing security gates at
your property. This will make it harder for thieves to gain access to your grounds and protect the area where your oil tank is kept. 0 Report any suspicious activity to the police without hesitation. , ■

IT was a definite case of “Bon Appetit” for students studying French from in the Ribble Valley.
I Around 40 pupils from Clitheroe Royal Grammar School enjoyed an evening-dining in style at the Stanley
I House Hotel in Mellon Restaurant manager Laurent Duval
said the youngsters had a three course meal starting with cappuccino of lan- goustine with tarragon gnocchi with vanilla Chantilly and a main course of
poached breast of chicken with pomme puree, wild mushroom and veloute of tarragon. Dessert was blackcurrant delice with lemon and liquorice. On arrival the pupils - who were
encouraged to speak French through out the night - were served a fruit cocktail and canapes. Our photograph shows Edward Bell
and Harriet Hargreaves studying the menu. (S260308/3) .
: All the homes, say the develop ers, will be finished to the highest specification throughout, including luxury Villeroy and Boch bath rooms. Each home has a designat ed workspace so that family mem bers can work from home and spend more quality time with their loved ones and less time commut ing with ever-increasing petrol costs. . ■
■
It is, say the developers and agents, the perfect setting to raise
a young family as part of a close- knit private village community offer ing additional security and peace of mind for parents.

of thanks and the committee served the buffet supper. Mem bers were reminded that the Safari Supper is on May 17th, starting at '7 p.m. from Margaret and Eric Baines’ home at Saw- ley. The county president’s evening is on May 22nd at Sam- lesbury. Next month’s meeting, on
