A true country lover a festival of delight!

TALES about a life-long love for the local countryside, in particular its rivers, have been penned by Hurst Green author Derek Hanvood. Mr Harwood, (65), of Smithy

Row, has published a book of humor ous and emotional memoirs in his autobiography entitled “A Life on the River”. It tells of his life as a Lancashire

■lad growing up in a mill town, post- Second World War, who develops a life-long interest in fly fishing and a particular love of the countryside. The book covers the “ups and

downs” of everyday life from child hood to maturity. Mr Harwood, pictured, who is the

secretary of Ribchester and District Angling Club, explained: “It does not deal in any way with the tech niques of the sport, but rather emphasises the adventure and joy of going fishing, and refers to fishing on local Lancashire rivers and streams including the Lune, the Ribble and Hodder and their tributaries. It also refers to fishing adventures in Scot land, Ireland and New Zealand.” . Former deputy head of art and

design at Bolton University, Mr Harwood, who is now retired, added: “In dealing with the ups and downs of life in the 40s, 50s and 60s, and up to the present day, it touches on the various significant events that have influenced my particular life. “It covers what it was like growing up as a young boy and teenager in

the mill towns of Blackburn and Darwen in the post-war years and leaving those towns to seek work in Manchester. It deals also with uni versity life, marriage and divorce, success and failure, coping with redundancy, cancer, life changing events in career and retirement,” he said. Copies of the book are available

from Kaydee Bookshop, Moor Lane, Clitheroe, where Mr Harwood will be holding a book signing this Satur day, April 14th, between 2 p.m. until 4 p.m. They are also available from Ken

Varey’s Outdoor World in Clitheroe, or direct from Mr Harwood at The Fold, 15 Smithy Row, Hurst Green, Clitheroe, BB7 9QA. (s)

VOICES from the Welsh valleys will be heard in Clitheroe over the May Day weekend. Clitheroe United Reformed Church, in

Moor Lane, is hosting a concert in aid of Friends of Chernobyl’s Children on Satur day, May 5th, 7 p.m. The New Harmony Singers, pictured,

are a mixed choir from Torfaen, who will be singing alongside Clitheroe Children’s Choir. This is the first visit to Lancashire for

the Welsh choir, who will be sightseeing around the local area over the weekend. Clitheroe Children’s Choir are boys and

girls aged seven to 11, from across the town’s primary schools. The aim of the evening is to cover the

cost of one child for this year’s visit to Clitheroe by children from Belarus, whose health is still blighted by the nuclear fall out from the accident in Chernobyl in 1986.

O Tickets are available at Clitlieroe Music, in Moor Lane. For more details, contact Julia Billinglon on 01200 429063.

CLITHEROE’s Great Days are coming early this year. In autumn 2006 organisers of

the annual music extravaganza decided to become part of a new arts event - Clitheroe Festival Weekend. It enables them to pool their

resources with organisations including Ribble Valley Rail, the Clitheroe Beer Festival, New Form Arts and Clitheroe The Future. The contribution from Great

Days will centre around music and dance. East Yorkshire’s Mambo

Jamho will open events on Fri day, May 18th. Following on stage at the St Mary’s Centre will be seven-piece Cuban band Asere. The band, which plays traditional Cuban songs, is returning to the Ribble Valley after proving to be a hit at the 2004 festival. Throughout the weekend of

May 18th to 20th, Great Days are planning a variety of per formances centred on the Castle bandstand. Artists already

booked include the Blackburn People’s Choir, the Laverne Sis ters and Clitheroe Town Band, which )vill start its summer sea son of outdoor concerts on the Sunday afternoon. O Tickets for the opening

night concert at the Church Brow venue cost £12 (£9 con cessions) and are available from Clitheroe Tourist Office. 9 For further details about

the weekend events visit www.great-days.co.uk.
