S the first car to make Mercedes SLK- style folding hard-tops accessible to the masses, Peugeot’s 206 Coupe Cabriolet deserved success - and landed it. Any affordable convertible th at can put


one over the Mazda MX-5 has to be very special indeed, and the 206 CC certainly cap­ tured the hearts of thousands of British buy­ ers. Once the novelty of that clever roof had worn off, the “early adopters” switched to the next in thing, leaving a healthy stock to choose from on the used market.


What You Pay Prices for the 206CC are still rather


volatile due to a flourishing parallel import market, but UK 1.6-litre cars open at £7,665 on a 2000 X plate and 2.0-litre models retail at around £8,265 on the same plate. Insur­ ance for the 206CC is reasonable, the 1.6-litre car being rated as Group 12, with the zippy 2.0-litre versions falling into Group 14.


What To Look For The big thing to look out for is the hood


mechanism. Make sure you test it a few times all the way up and all the way down. One insider tip is to carry a couple of bungee cords in the car in case of hood failure. I t is usually possible to get the hood into one position or another, but the bootlid usually stays res­ olutely erect. This way the bootlid can be secured shut securely enough to get you home. I t is not pretty, but it is effective. Later cars were much less prone to hood failures.

I t is the same unit which powers the 206 GTi, although in this instance there is a bit more weight to haul about, so the edge is taken off outright acceleration. Nonetheless, a rest to 60 time of 8.7 seconds is pretty smft, and a top speed of 127 m.p.h. should be enough for most. Whereas many cabriolets have the sort of


body rigidity that generates noises like a dropped sack of typewriters every time you hit a bump in the road, on the road the French company has tried to make most of the attributes that have made the 206GTi such a success - slick gearchange, supple sus­ pension, entertaining handling and deft steer­ ing - attributable to the 206 CC. The translation works well, although in


truth the Coupe/Cabrio often appeals to those who put appearances before outright ability. Still, like owning a diver’s watch capa­ ble of descending to 200 metres, even if you do not actually need it, it is reassuring to know you have the capability. Just in case. A more affordable 1.6-litre 16v variant is


offered if the 2.0-litre car is a little pricey for you. I t is also the only derivative you can have with automatic transmission.'


Overall The rule with 206 Coupe Cabriolets is to


go for as late a model as you can. If you do go for an early car, make sure the hood is work­ ing when you buy the car and you may well


be fine. The rest of the vehicle is rarely prob­ lematic.

Mazda3 diesel, you had to content your­ self with a rather tepid 107 b.h.p. model. That is no longer the case. Mazda now has its


own punchy diesel. It sounds like a droid from Star Wars, but the2.0MZR-CD engine makes up for a lack of a snappy name with some decidedly brisk per­ formance figures. Having estab­


lished a reputation with the MazdaS MPS for unobtrusive hatches with an apocalyptic wallop, the Hiroshima-based maker now wheels in a 142 b.h.p. diesel engine that repre­ sents one of the best diesel engines in its class in terms of power to weight. Although a 9.7 sec­ ond sprint to 60 m.p.h. does nOt sound like much, like any turbo-diesel unit it is the mid range where this car does its best work. Get


the car rolling and you will tap into 3G0Nm of torque. This puts a gulf


between the Mazda


and the 320Nm that the Ford engine manages, so perhaps it has been worth the • wait. In fact, this MZR-CD unit fea­ tures even more torque than what is commonly seen m the “industry stan­ dard” 2.0-litre diesel fitted to the BMW 320d. This muscle gets developed at just 2,000 r.p.m. as well, so you will not need to rev the engine until the valves bounce to

make decent progress. A variable geome­


try turbo is key to the power output, but this is more than just a budget hop-up job. The front drive shafts have been replaced with beefed- up units to cope with the added urge. Spe­ cial bodyshell rein­ forcements from the Mazda3 MPS chas­ sis are also used. The


front suspension upper plate, front cowl memlicr and heftier middle tunnel cross member all combine to reduce body flex. The hydraulic


power assisted steer­ ing has been opti­ mised for improved feedback and there is a revised exiiaust system to help the engine breatlie more freely. Bigger sta­ bilisers and pumped up spring and damper rates prom­ ise sharp handling.
