TICKETS have been selling fast for the “Once-in-a-Lifetime Vintage Film Show” being hosted by the Rib ble Film Club in Clitheroe this Sun day. 'The club has joined forces with the

North West Film Archive to stage the one-off screening of fascinating films of the Ribble Valley in times past. Supported by North West Vision, the

event will feature films shot in the Rib ble Valley over the past 100 years, some of them not screened publicly before. This specially selected compilation of

films will include parades in Clitheroe and Whalley to celebrate Whitsuntide, Empire Day and the 1919 Armistice. The 1937 Clitheroe Coronation pag

eant is seen, as are the later celebra tions in Sawley and Great Harwood in 1953. In a last “Hurrah” before the Second World War, the Pendle Forest and Craven Hunt set off from Gisburn. Local industries and firms should

also feature and the county as a whole will be illustrated in films made for schools in 1963 about the growth of the post-war economy of the region. Tickets are on sale in advance at the St Mary’s Centre, in Church Street,

daily from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. They cost £4 for film club members and £5 for non-members. Any remaining tickets will be available on the door, but turn up in good time as demand on the night is expected to be high. Film club chairman Bruce Dowles

said: “We know th a t this will be an exceptional and rewarding experience and we are anticipating a sellout. “The doors will open at 6-30 p.m.,

with full bar facilities, and extra film club staff will be on hand to usher peo ple through to the auditorium, so expect no queues!” O The Ribble Film Club screens

acclaimed films from around the world at the St Mary’s Centre each Sunday evening. Speaking of the club, Mr Dowles added: “We are already book ing films for our 2007-08 season, com mencing on September 2nd in an Aus-' tralian accent with “Jindabyne” anH hopefully followed by “10 Canoes”, the first ever film in an Aboriginal lan guage!” For details of the Ribble Film Club

HARD to believe it is four years since the Bowland Brewery served up its first pints of real ale, reviving a long-dormant tradition of brewing beer in the Ribble Valley. ■ To celebrate its anniver sary, it is hosting a “Bangers and Beer Bash” open weekend on April 21st and 22nd, organised as part of the Taste Lan cashire Festival. Located next to the

Bashall Barn Farm Shop, at Bashall Town, the brewery will be open to the public from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on both days. Brewery tours, followed by a refreshing pint and a banger in a bun, will be available throughout the day at £3.50 per person. Due to the size constraints of the brewery premises, numbers will be restricted per tour, so be sure to book by calling Richard Baker on 07952 639 465 The Brewery Visitor

Centre and Shop will also be open, ivith many prod ucts on offer including three bottled Bowland beers and a new range of chutneys made with Bow land beer.

Music for all

BRILLIANT young pianist Ashley Wass per formed an entertaining programme for Clitheroe Concerts Society. Ashley, pictured, was

the first British pianist to win the World Piano com petition and only the sec ond to get to the finals of the Leeds Piano Competi tion in 20 years. He has eight acclaimed records out on the Naxos label and others besides. Beethoven’s “32 Varia

tions on an Original Theme” opened the con cert, a fascinating exercise in the use of both the full range of the piano key board, together with cross rhythms, chromatic deco rations and abrupt changes in dynamics. The second piece was another work of Beethoven, the “Andante Favori”, origi nally conceived as a sub stantial second movement to his “Sonata in C”, but eventually published as an attractive self-standing piece of music. The third work was

more demanding emotion ally. This was the “Sonata

for piano”, written in the early 1920s by the English composer and pacifist, Frank Bridge. Ashley described Bridge as possi bly the most influential composer of the 20th Cen tury and the mentor of Benjamin Britten. The composition was a

cry of anguish at the irra tional slaughter of the First World War, the theme a t first sounding confident, then deter mined and after an emo tional climax, returning subdued and slightly altered. It paralleled The

Great War itself, with its jaunty optimism in 1914,

■ its increasingly desperate progression to mass slaughter and its final realisation that very little had been achieved was obvious. Although not difficult

to listen to, the contrast ing moods and emotions of this music made for a greater appreciation of the cup of tea or coffee at the interval, and a keen antic ipation of the second half. This did not disappoint: three “Petrarch Sonnets” by Franz Liszt and the second sonata by Robert Schumann were exquisite ly played. He played a short

encore, “The Dove”, by Messiaen, confessing that it was difficult to follow that kind of programme with something appropri ate. Ashley’s next engage ment will be in the Copley Symphony Hall in San Diego, with violinist Sarah Chang. In the meanwhile he is recording a long awaited CD of music for four hands, with Martin Roscoe.
