SEEING the world’s highest mountain and visiting Ever est base camp fulfilled a life long ambition for a Ribble Valley barrister. Richard Bennett described his
trip to the Himalayas as “mis sion accomplished”. “Everest base camp is some
where I have always wanted to visit,” said Mr Bennett, whose chambers are in Preston. A keen walker who had
already done some mountaineer ing, Mr Bennett, who is married to Angela and has a
15-.vear-old daughter Katie, signed up for a 19-day trek witli travel compa ny Exodus. After purchasing specialist equipment, including a sleeping
bag that would be comfortable at -25° and a special jacket, Mr Bennett set off on his expedi tion. His personal journey got off
to an amazing start after he coincidently found himself sit ting next to a second cousin of Sir Edmund Hillary on his first stage flight from Manchester to London. In 1953, Hillary and Sherpa Tenzing were the first team to successfully climb Ever est.
Once in Nepal, Mr Bennett
joined 15 people from across the country on the e.xpedition. Describing the trek, 52-year-
old Mr Bennett said: “It took 12 days to get to Everest base camp. On the way we climbed Nangkartshang at 5,100m and I had problems because of frost bite. The wind chill was dowm to
-20° and I had to get some help from the Sherpas for my hand. I was using sticks to help me walk and my hands were in gloves but they were not moving. “We then made way our up to
Everest base camp at 5,400m and then we went up Kala Pat- ta r at 5,545m, which is over 18,000 ft, and took pictures of Everest from the summit.” “Throughout the trip w’e
experienced very varied weather because we followed the river which emanates from the Kumbu Glacier. At river level we climbed in tropical conditions, but over 4,000m it became extremely cold. You have to spend two days at the same alti tude to acclimatise. Simple things like bending dowm to tie a shoelace make you short of breath and it is the same when
you try to zip up your sleeping bag. It varied how far we w'alked each day, but it w-as between eight and 10 miles. You have to walk slow'ly because of the thin air and the lack of o.xygen.” Throughout the trek the
group’s equipment was trans ported by yak and the trip led by Sherpas. Accommodation w’as provided in basic wmoden huts with no electricity. Said Mr Bennett: “The water
in our bottles would be frozen by morning because it was so cold.” In preparation for the trip Mr
Bennett did a lot of walking, as well as some cardio vascular work: “It w'as quite a strenuous expedition, not a gentle stroll.” He hopes his mission will have
raised about £1,000 for MS charity, (s)
Chris puts his heart into this adventure
ANOTHER Ribble Valley resident is also trek and fulfilling a lifelong ambition, celebrating after making it to Everest Said Mr Wood: “As a youngster I lived Base Camp - but as part of a different in New Zealand and in 1954 went for a expedition.
w'alk up the Franz Josef Glacier. The guide Local businessman Chris Wood, the w’as the man who taught Edmund Hillary
director of Tero Services Ltd, w'as part of to climb. This story stuck with me and 50 an expedition raising money for the years later I got to Everest too.” British Heart Foundation.
It was on March I9th that Mr Wood He set off on March 9th, returning to made it to Everest Base Camp. He said:
the UK on March 25th, walking a total of “Spring was late in the mountains to the 100 kilometres over the duration of the . extent that the expedition that went two
weeks earlier failed to make it through the icy conditions. There was a great deal of ice and snow still on the ground and we had to endure temperatures of -20° when in our tents at night. “Around 2 p.m. on the Monday we
arrived at the foot of the brutal ice fall protecting the final approach to Mount Everest. During the trek one participant suffered a major cardiac incident which resulted in an emergency evacuation involving being carried off the mountain by a relay of Sherpas, the altitude pre venting access by helicopter.” The total raised by the expedition was
£140,000, including the £6,000 raised by Mr Wood, (s)
