MP slams licence rise
RIBBLE VALLEY MP Nigel Evans has slammed the latest- Government decision to increase the BBC television licence fee. Saying th a t the decision did
not make any sense, he added: “The Government must look again at the future of public tele vision in this country. “While this increase is official
ly at below the rate of inflation, this will still mean families hav ing to find £150 per year for the licence fee once the full effect of the increases over the next five years is felt”. Under Government plans
recently announced, the fee is set to rise by 3% in both 2007 and 2008 and by 2% in each of the following three years. The new increase would take the licence fee to £135.45 - it currently costs £131.50.

Youngsters’ festive cheer for children
CHRISTMAS presents and gifts with a difference are helping to feed needy children in Third World countries. Big-hearted pupils a t
St Augustine’s RC High School, in Billington, tho u g h t ab o u t others before themselves when they raised money for CAFOD’s World Gifts project. Instead of buying each
other presents, pupils donated the equivalent amount towards purchas ing cows and goats for poor families in Third World countries. By th e time the chil
dren broke up for the Christmas holidays, they
had collected over £2,200 - enough to buy a herd of 88 goats or 30 cows. Headteacher Mr
Antony McNamara said: “Classes have been encouraged to give their goats and cows names, and a t least two gruff billy goats destined for Africa will spor t the names of members of staff, “In addition, staff at
the school are raising money to cover the costs of training a teacher in Africa.” Pictured here is Year 9

THERE was a nice surprise for Alison Sheldon, of Chat- bum, when Hyndbum Used Furniture Store called to col lect her old washing machine. The store, which collects re-usable household items for distribution to people in need throughout East Lancashire, arrived with a bouquet in recognition of their 10,000th
donated item. The Hynd bum Used Furniture Store is located in Accrington and can be contacted on 01254 393784. If you need to dispose of
your unwanted reuseable furniture or white goods, staff are waiting to hear from you. You can-also find out more at the store’s website (
www.hufs.co.uk).
Staff are also hoping that
people who received new mobile phones, computers or luxury items for Christmas will donate their old ones for re-use in the community. Pictured presenting the
flowers to Mrs Sheldon is Daniel Allen, who is nearing completion of a warehousing training programme at the store.(s)

has in the past been targeted by vandals and therefore we didn’t think it was practical to replace it this year. “We decided to leave the dis
play open and rely on people’s goodwill not to tamper with it. Unfortunately, there are some idiots about who decided to van dalise it. “We are keen to trace whoever
is responsible and urge anyone who has information to contact either ourselves on 01200 424722 or the police on 01200 443344.”
This is not the first time figures
have been stolen from the town’s crib. Last year, thieves stole an ox,
donkey and another figure - believed to be either Joseph or a shepherd. In 2000 an attack on New
Year’s Eve caused damage esti mated at £1,500 after three shep herds went missing, a wise man lost his head and the donkey’s ears were broken. The following year the Baby Jesus figure was stolen twice.
