Silly hats and wild walking

by Faiza Afzaal

'WET weather failed to dampen the spirits of a group of walkers who turned out in force to enjoy the 12th annual Whalley Walk and Ridiculous Hat Competi tion. The 30 walkers, accompa

nied by Basil the dog, donned silly hats and com pleted the six-mile circular starting from Whalley. Since The Gamecock pub,

in Great Harwood, was closed for renovation, the walkers were treated to mince pies and mulled wine in the car park. The children were served

mulled 'Vimto and a warm- spiced fruit cordial called “Belgravia and Tobago”. The mulled wine was

donated by Mr Mick Oates and Mrs Stephanie

Grimshaw, of Accrington, who served all the refresh

ments. The weather improved as

the group returned to Whal ley via the Nab and to end the day, some of the walkers enjoyed a well-deserved drink and lunch at a village pub. The Most Ridiculous Hat

competition in the junior category was once again won by brothers James (she) and four-year-old Myles Rose, of Whalley. James wore an attractive

hat in a Ghristmas pudding design, while Miles’ hat fea tured a large silver Christ mas cracker. Both hats had been

designed by the youngsters themselves. Mr Richard Sagar, of

Clitheroe, who wore a Union Jack hat with a friendly sea monster creation, was crowned the winner in the adult category. All the

prizewinners were awarded certificates and chocolates. The post-Christmas walk,

which was organised by local resident Mr Ivan Har greaves, raised £55 for the Friends of Whalley Prima ry School. Our pictures show - Top
