ROEFIELD Leisure Cen tre, the registered charity d e d ic a te d to p ro v id in g sport and recreation for the community of the Ribble Valley, is turning back the clock to M ay 2005 by restoring free parking for

its customers. After much deliberation,

Roefield’s management team has decided to absorb the day time and weekend car parking charges introduced by Ribble Valley Borough Council in May 2005. Customers using the car

park, which is operated by the council independently of the leisure centre, will still need to buy a parking ticket and dis play it in their vehicle. However, if Roefield cus

tomers then hand in the ticket at reception on their next visit

Pupils spread some festive cheer

If ^ I

A BUSY programme of festive activ ity throughout December marked the run-up to Christmas at The Manor House in Chatburn. Pupils from both Brookside Pri

mary School in Clitheroe and Chat- bum Primary School visited the res idents and sang carols. The Brookside pupils were accom

panied by several of their teachers and Mr 'Trevor Lord was pianist for the day. This was followed by a special visit

from Ribble Valley Mayor, Coun. Peter Ainsworth. In addition, a very polished piano

recital was given by Mr Tom Wardle and talented dancers from the Mary Waddington School of Dance, in Clitheroe, took centre stage and per formed a bit of jazz, tap and ballet

with additional performances of singers and flute playing. Later, a candlelit carol service was given by members of the congregations of local churches and chapels. As if this wasn’t enough, between

all these events, many of the resi dents and day care visitors also enjoyed Christmas performances at Chatburn and Grindleton primary schools. The senior citizens’ parties given

by Chatburn villagers and the pupils a t Rowland County Secondary School were also enjoyed. Another highlight of the season was the visit to the home by Father Christmas, assisted by Clitheroe Round Table. Father Christmas brought an indi

vidual gift for each resident and spent time mingling with everyone.

Last, but not least, it was eyes down as residents enjoyed a Christmas bingo afternoon to raise funds for the church clock restoration fund and Manor House Social Fund. An open invitation to the event

was accepted by many villagers, friends, relatives of the home’s resi dents and daycare visitors. Prizes were awarded for “lines”

and “full house” and a Grand Raffle was drawn during the interval. A potato pie tea followed by coffee and mince pies rounded off the event, which raised £150. Pictured are pupils from Chatbum

Primary School singing for residents at The Manor House in Chatburn and, inset, pupils from Brookside Primary School get ready to per form. (s)

Sadness at death of former village vicar

A FORMER vicar of Downham has died a t the age of 81. The Rev. Canon Francis Eric Chard was

vicar in the Ribble Valley village for 16 years. He had been appointed rural dean of Whalley in 1983 and in 1988 left Downham to become the county’s first full-time Ecu menical Officer. Educated at the Royal Masonic School in

Bushey, he worked for a time as a chemist with ICI. A wartime bomber pilot. Canon Chard graduated from the University of Durham in 1955. In 1981, he returned to Durham after being awarded a Master of

Letters. Canon Chard was ordained in 1957 and

served curacies in Cleveleys and at Preston Parish Church before becoming vicar of St Bartholomew’s in Blackburn where he stayed for 12 years before moving to Down

ham. After leaving the village. Canon Chard

spent six years in his post as Lancashire’s Ecumenical Cfficer. His ecumencial work first began in 1961, it was eight years later he was named Ecumenical Officer for the Diocese of Blackburn and was also Diocesan Adviser for the Pastoral Auxiliary Ministry. In 1975, Canon Chard was put in charge

of plans to mark the Colden Jubilee of the Blackburn Diocese, co-ordinating all cele brations for the occasion. A member of the Archbishop of Canter

bury’s Commission on Roman Catholic rela tions, Canon Chard once preached to royal ty, giving a sermon at Sandringham Church in 1989 in the presence of the Duke and Duchess of Kent. Three years earlier in 1986 he had been

made an honorary canon of Blackburn Cathedral. A blood donor for many decades. Canon Chard notched up his century in 1995; 14 years'after receiving a gold award for 50 donations from the National Blood Transfusion Servica Canon Chard donated his 100th pint a

week before his 71st birthday. At the time he was one of only three donors in the county to reach this milestone. He and his tvife, Ethel, were married in Bolton after meeting during the war. The
