CASH grants a re on offer for community volunteers in the Ribble Valley - but the closing date for applications is less than a month away. If you volunteer for a com

munity group or organisation or would like to start up a com munity project you could be eligible for a grant. The cash could help you to get your proj

ect up and running or help you to develop your skills and capa bilities. I t could pay for training to

help you make an existing com munity project bigger and bet ter or, if you are unemployed, help you to develop your skills and self-confidence through voluntary work as a route back into employment.

This year alone more than

£58,000 has been awarded in Lancashire to more than 100 people who work as volunteers in their communities, enabling them to develop their o\vn skills and project ideas. The closing date for the next

round of "Community Cham pions” funding for Lancashire is January 22nd. For an appli

cation form, which is simple and straightforward to com plete, contact the Council for Voluntary Service on 01695 733737 or apply by e-mail to: martin@wlcvs.org. The maximum grant avail

able is £1,000 and successful applicants will have their grant award confirmed by the end of February.

A JOINER from Chaigley pre sented a cheque for £1,140 to the North West Air Ambu lance after requesting dona tions in lieu of presents at his 40th birthday party. Jim Holden, whose Business

TW Holden and Son Joinery Contractors, is based a t Yew Tree Farm in Chaigley, wanted to ensure the air ambulance continued with its vital med ical service to remote rural areas.

After deciding he was “too

old” for birthday presents, Jim asked for donations instead at his party held in (shipping Vil lage Hall, which included clas sic comedy entertainment from “Three Men in a Bow Tie”. At the cheque presentation,

part-time paramedic for the air ambulance, Owen Cookson, of Chipping, took the Holden family to the helicopter base at Squires Gate, where they saw team procedures for an emer

Gold star facilities for caravanners

CAMPERS and caravanners who vis it a Clitheroe camp site are using the best toilet facilities in the country, according to the judges of the 2006 Loo of the Year Awards. Workers at the Clitheroe Camping and Cara

vanning Club site in Edisford Road were flushed with pride after being named the overall UK winners at the awards, out of 1,100 entries. The site achieved a four-star award for its toi

lets, which cater to campers from all over the UK. Chairman of the Camping and Caravanning

Club’s Sites Committee, Mel Hill, said: “Our club sites have a strong reputation for both friendliness and cleanliness. ” Camping and Caravanning site public rela

tions officer. Candy Evans said: “The site won over Moto motorway services, nursery schools and entries from all over the UK.”

gency call-out. This included watching the helicopter take oft in 50 knot winds to a road traffic accident in a remote area of Lancaster. Jim’s father, Tom Holden, a

retired farmer, knows himself from personal experience, just how important the service is, after he suffered heart prob lems on the family farm 18 months ago. He said: “This service is fan

tastic. “By providing quick transfer

times to specialist units, like the heart hospital at Black pool, they had me there in six minutes from Chaigley - a life saver.” Jim has expressed thanks to

all his clients, friends and fami ly, who made donations at his party. Our picture shows Jim pre

Generous punters raise plenty of charity cash

A VALLEY village pub had a grand year in 2006. Regulars a t the Buck Inn,

Paythorne, helped raise around £5,000 for various different good causes. A charity auction night organised by landlords Rachael and Steven Carroll with donations from villagers and local businesses, made £2,222 for Chil dren in Need. Macmillan Nurses ben efited from the £300 raised at a cheese and wine evening held at the village pub and £140 was collected at the fire work evening for the village chapel. Another major fund-raiser was the pub’s Friday night quiz which last

year raised around £2,000 - divided equally between the North West Air Ambulance and the Royal National Institute for the Blind. Mrs Carroll said members of the

winning teams last year decided not to take their cash prizes home, but instead donate them to one of the charity boxes. She said: “We have a lot of teams taking part in the quiz. “One of the regular winners now

calls itself Sooty’s Friends and sup ports the RNIB and another has taken the name Yellow Fliers and donates its Mnnings to the air ambu lance.”
