www.ciitheroetoday.co.uk Ups and downs of school days!

“ROLLERCOASTER DAY” a t a Kibble Valley high school put a few new twists and turns into the cur riculum! Organised by the science and

maths departments at St Augustine’s High School, Billington, the purpose of the event was to engage pupils in enjoyable, hands-on activities, all of which revealed the extent to which science and maths play a key role in fairground ride teclmology. The day began with a presentation

on how the design and operation of rollercoasters requires detailed knowledge of physics, chemistry, maths and, in particular, Pythago ras’s theory. Next came a session in the hall

working with model rollercoasters to investigate angles of slopes and weight of cars to determine speed, velocity and acceleration. Another slot - straight out of Hogwarts - was a chemistry of special effects demon stration in a science lab, with plenty of exciting flashes and bangs! Pupils also went to the ICT rooms,

where they used special software to design and then “virtually” ride their own rollercoasters. Red and green bleepers indicated which aspects of the ride were safe or needed modify ing, The day was timely, with school trips to Lightwater Valley and Dis neyland Paris on the horizon,, where pupils could enjoy real life roller coaster rides.
