they continued along High Lane towards H i^ Field, where a fine view was enjoyed across Wharfedale towards the reef knolls in the vicinity of Thorpe and Cracoe. Before reaching the village of Hebden,

the walkers passed through a traditional Dales hay meadow where several species of wild flower, including a mass of melan choly thistle, were seen. The walk contin ued into Hebden, where the walkers stopped for lunch. They then made their way from Heb

den, passing a salmon farm, to the River Wharfe, following its banks along the Dalesway u ntil they reached Linton Falls. The members then chose different routes back to Grassington. During the walk, 75 species of flowers

were seen, including meadow cranesbill, mousear hawkweed, milkwort, great bur- net and ox-eye daisy. Included in the 27 types of bird spotted en route were a tree creeper, a family of spotted flycatcher, a common sandpiper and many swifts.

YEAR 6 pupils at a rural Ribble Valley school have been getting on their bikes and learning about the importance of cycling safely while out and about. Seven pupils at Brennand’s Endowed

Primary School, Slaidburn, completed the theory module, while six youngsters fin ished the practical module using the school. yard as their highway.

All the young cyclists enjoyed the ses

Lakeland base for walkers

WINDERMERE was the base for three days of walking in the south lakes and north Lan cashire by members of Clitheroe Ramblers. On day one, the lakeland

explorers travelled from Win dermere station to Burnside. From the village, which is

dominated by Croppers paper mill, they began a l^mile walk following the Dalesway via Staveley and Bowness back to Windermere. On day two the party had a

relaxing cruise on Windermere, followed by a journey by steam

train to Haverthwaite. After starting a 13.5-mile hike from the station, they followed a route to Finsthwaite down to the Rusland Valley before turn ing northwards to Sawrey and the Hawkshead ferry. After a short crossing they reached Bowness just in time to catch the last bus back to Winder- mere. The final day was a very easy seven-mile walk around the north Lancashire village of Sil- verdale. The weather was tropi cal throughout the three days. The walks were led by Bryan Dobson.
