Dog Inn set for

play-off

DOG Inn take on Globe Bullough at Wilson's on Sunday for a place in the Harry Dewhurst Memorial League First Division. The two finished level

• on points at the end of the 20-game league season, and with goal difference hot counting, a play-off is necessary to decide who secures the runners-up tro phy and medals, as well as promotion. Should Dog, the Bud-

weiser Boys, achieve pro motion, they will be play ing in the top flight for the ■ first time in their history. Manager Simon Kerins

says that this achievement would mean everything to everyone at the club. "We are essentially a very young side that is going to develop together over the coming years.

- “Going up would be a

i®- dream come true but, if we get it wrong on the day, Sunday will turn into a liv ing nightmare."

Awards night

THE CLITHEROE and District Darts and Domi noes League held their presentation evening a t the Swan and Royal on Friday.

, Black Horse collected their Darts League win ners’ trophy, with Kings Arms runners-up. Kings Arms did, howev

er, win the Dominoes League, with the Buck B runners-up. The trebles were won by

Buck B, who saw off Bridge, and Buck’s Andy Porter won the singles, beating Ray Hargreaves, before adding the highest checkout award with a 164. Porter and Jack Hay

ward then teamed up to win the doubles, beating

' John Schofield and Harg reaves. Porter also went home

with the outstanding male player award. Black Horse won the

team knockout with victory over Kings Arms, while Bernard Stanley of Horse shoe won the Captain’s Cup. Horseshoe won the

round robin, while the out standing female was Roisin Hayward and outstanding youth was David Flynn.

Rimington title joy after superb run

RIMINGTON were crowned East Lan cashire League First Division champi ons last week - the first league title in their 34-year history. The locals ended the season with an

incredible sequence of 11 successive wins to ward off the challenge of Hurst Green and Stacksteads St Joseph’s, finishing eight points clear at the top. And, on top of their Craven Cup

victory the previous week, they rounded off a remarkable season in style. They first clinched the title with a

2-0 win over Stacksteads in front of a crowd of around 100. Rimington turned in a solid per

formance against their title rivals, in a game which they never looked like los ing.

On a dry and bumpy pitch, it was difficult for either side to play flowing football, and the first half was a

scrappy affair, with the ball in the air more than on the floor. But Rimington went up a gear in

the second half and Jon Penman opened the scoring in typical fashion with a powerful header at the back post. He then doubled the lead, forcing

the ball home from close range. With Stacksteads needing a draw to

clinch runners-up spot, the home side waiting for the onslaught, but such was Rimington’s dominance, it never arrived, and the locals could have won by more. But Penman’s brace proved enough,

and the celebrations could begin. Rimington were then presented

with the trophy on Friday, but not until they won their last match of the season, beating Silsden 4-1. Against a young, spirited Silsden, it

looked like Rimington weren’t in the mood as they were outrun and out

played after Mankowski had scored early on. But in the second half, Rimington

showed why they have mounted a superb run of wins as Penman raced clear and rounded the keeper to score his 22nd league goal of the season. Daniel Green made it 3-0 with an

excellent strike, before Ben Walker netted his first of the season with a tremendous left-foot volley. With keeper Kershaw up for a cor

ner, Silsden cleared the ball and broke away to score a consolation, but the night belonged to Rimington. After losing four out of five at the

start of the campaign, Rimington recovered to mount the most success ful season in their history, and manag er Terry Braithwaite said: “I have nothing but praise for all the players, my assistant Steve Conti and every one connected with the club.”

Green pull off famous double

HURST Green Reserves completed a remarkable league and cup double with wins in their final two East Lancashire Football League fixtures. First they thrashed Peel

Park 5-0 to clinch the Reserve Division title. And they followed that

by beating Enfield 2-1 in the Reserve Cup Final. Goals in that game came

from Alex Young and' Vinny Wilkinson, and player-manager Tim Craven capped a great sea son by being named man- of-the-match. The first team, however,

had to settle for runners- up spot in the top division. Having completed a

league and cup double of their own the previous sea son, they were left biting

their nails in the final few weeks of the season. Hurst Green made a fly

ing s ta r t to the season, completed a huge chunk of their season early on, and led the way. But Rimington, with

games in hand, went on a long run of good results and overhauled them. A spokesman said: “Of

course we are disappointed at finishing as runners-up, . but congratulations to Rimington on their tremendous run to beat us to the title. “The club would like to

place on record its thanks to manager Neale Brown who is stepping down. “He has been manager

for five years and really taken us places by turning i the club around.”

Chelsea on time!

CLITHEROE Royal Grammar School’s Chelsea Andrews achieved her sec ond national qualifying time at the Radford SC Open swim meet in Sheffield at the weekend. The 100m butterfly

qualifying time has been within Chelsea’s grasp for many weeks, but she even tually nailed it down while competing for her club Blackburn Centurions. Chelsea managed to

achieve her goal of her sec ond NQT for her number one stroke, and with the time of 1:07:37, not only does that quality her for the 15-year-olds’ age

Clitheroe progress to semi-finals

CLITHEROE Tennis Club A pro gressed into the semi-finals of the cup at the expense of Feniscowles B. The top pair of Derek Parrott

and Roger Ravenscroft had a straight-forward first match, and did not need to be at their best to win 6-2,6-4. On the other court, Phil Mile-

ham and Steve Pym joined forces for the first time this season, and also proved too strong for their opponents with a 6-2, 6-2 score. ■ 'That meant only one more set was required to clinch the tie, and they did just that as Parrott and Ravenscroft crushed the second pair 6-1, 6-0. Mileham and Pym were also in

stingy form, running out 6-2, 6-2 victors to complete a 4-0 score that took a little over 90 minutes to complete. Next week the team are at home

against Blackburn Northern in the league, and any visitors to Chat- burn Road will be welcome to spectate. ■ WHALLEY B advanced to the next round of the East Lancs Sec ond and Third Division Cup with victory over Parkwood B. Their first pair of Gordon Pim-

perton and Robert Houseman won the f irs t rubber, before David Lynch and Peter Heys struggled, losing in two sets. But that was as bad as it got for

the locals, as Lynch and Heys showed their experience to play clever and steady tennis to win in straight sets. And Pimperton and Houseman

did likewise to seal a 3-1 rubbers win.

However, their C team crashed

out of the competition at the hands of Feniscowles. Fielding an inexperienced side,

Andrew Cuyes and Alan Singleton played some good tennis, losing both their matches but securing a set on the way. Julie and Susan Ormerod also

played well, losing narrowly in straight sets. In the Mixed League, 'Whalley

A made a good start to their title challenge, defeating Sunnyhurst 9- 0.

Richard Lambert and Cathy

Holmes were in top form, playing some delightful tennis, as were Gordon Pimperton and Karen Famhill. However, the B team, having

won promotion last year, are find ing things tougher, going down to a similar score against the highly- rated Towneley. Robert Houseman, Sandra

Frost, Jackie Norris and Roger Walker all played well, but in the end a talented Towneley team won in straight sets.

the 14-year-olds’ age group, and fourth in the combined 14 and i5-year- olds’ age group. She was extremely
