Valley in the grip of Royal fever!

by Faiza Afzaal ROYAXi fever is set to grip the

Ribble Valley next Thursday. Excitement is mounting as hun

dreds of people prepare to wel come Her M a jes ty the Queen when she visits the picturesque area as part of her 80th birthday celebrations. As exclusively revealed by the

Clitheroe Advertiser and Times last month, the royal visitor, who will be accompanied by The Duke of Edinburgh, will visit Dunsop Bridge and the Whitewell Valley (part of the Duchy of Lancaster Estate) next Thursday morning. The eagerly-awaited visit will

mark a re tu rn to one of th e Queen’s favourite places - she has previously expressed a desire to retire to the Ribble Valley. The morning tr ip will s ta r t

when she arrives at Blackburn Railway Station. She will then proceed to th e town’s Church Street area for a walkabout during which she will unveil a plaque. The royal party then makes its

way to Radholme Laund Farm in Whitewell. There th e p a r ty will view a

tors tvill then depart by car to Pud- dleducks Cafe, Village Store arid Post Office, in the Centre of the Kingdom-Dunsop Bridge. There, they will be welcomed by

owners Phil and Janette Wood- head, who have been running the business, dubbed as the “Sains- burys of Dunsop Bridge” for more than five years.

In th a t time, the couple have

worked hard to provide an exem plary service to local people by keeping the post office going and selling groceries, mainly local pro duce. Earlier this week, an excited Mr

Woodhead told us: “I am still in shock. We are honoured to wel come the Queen. Final prepara tions are under way and everyone is looking forward to greeting the royal party, especially my 14-year-

old daughter, Melissa, and son, Neil (23). The premises are deco rated every year and I have bought a new scone cutter specially!” Meanwhile, it will be a proud

day for a lucky Year 6 Thorney- holme Primary School pupil, who will present a posy and a card on the village green outside the cafe to wish the Queen a very happy 80th birthday.

Bright ideas set for top award?

A CLITHEROE school girl is a semi-finalist in a national competition to help disabled children. Nine-year-old Nyima

Murry, a pupil at St James Primary School, Clitheroe, has reached the final stages of the Ready, Willing and Mobile competition, launched earlier this year by the Mobility Roadshow. I t called for bright ideas to help young people with dis abilities to get out and about more. Nyima has reached

the semi-finals in the seven-to-11 age category with her bright idea “wheels for occasions”. Feeling lucky to have

different types of shoes in her own wardrobe - sparkly party shoes, trainers for sport, chunky outdoor shoes for walking- she thought it would be great if her disabled sister, Pema, could also have a wardrobe of different “shoes” for her wheel chair. So Nyima set to work and created a stun ning range of inter changeable wheel designs. Commenting on the

standard of entries in this second year of the

competition, Jacqui Jones, director of proj ects and events for Mobility Roadshow, said: "We certainly have had a wider range of ideas this year. It is tremendously encourag ing to see young people being extremely thoughtful and creative to help others." Final judging for the

competition was due to take place yesterday at the Royal College of Art in London. The overall winner will

receive £1,000 cash for equipment and Staedtler stationery and art and craft materials worth £250 for their school. For themselves they will take home a Sony digital camera, £100 worth of HarperCollins books of their choice and a Calvert Trust activity weekend. There are also runners-up prizes. The winners will be

presented with their prizes by paralympic champion athlete Dame Tanni Grey-Thompson on National Young Dis abled Persons Day, June 8th, a t the opening of the Mobility Roadshow at Kemble Airfield, near Swindon.
