MNANANiifV& SUPPORTS THE BLUES

B Take this voucher io Glitheroe's game against Shepshed Dynamo on Saturday and admission will be cut to £4 with concessions at £2.50

Thursday, Februai7 16th,' 2006 ^ - with your sports team of: Edward Lee,^ C and/Adrian Capstick,:

SO what now for Clitheroe Football Club? Having sacked arguably their

most influential manager ever, where does the Shawbridge side go from here? ■ The club have made it clear that it ^vas a difficult, yet necessary deciaon to remove Tommy Lawson as man ager, but they insist his exit is not a backward step and \vill not be the death of the club - only the re-birth. Lawson was a breath of fresh air

to the club with his attractive style of play at the start of this season, and he was the best appointment any club at Glitheroe’s level could have hoped for at the time. But it became evident to the com

mittee that although they had a lot to thank him for, their relationship could only work in the short term. The club are aiming to build from

the ground up, develop their own players and work closely ■with the local non-league scena ' It won’t happen overnight, and is

clearly a long-term goal, but they couldn’t sustain the expensive prospect of relying upon the nucleus of players travelling from further afield. According to acting chairman

m yi' If? \u I it'-

Carl Gamer, there has already been a strong interest in the vacant posi tion by suitable candidates. He said: “This is not the death of

Clitheroe Football Club, this is the re-birth, highlighted by the fact that although we have not advertised the position, we have already had three ex-professional players apply, all with managerial experience at Uni- Bond level and abova” '

What now for Blues? Whalley president ■

By Adrian Capstick

GLITHEROE’S carelakcr-managcr Mark Smithcringalc is “very excited’’ about Saturday’s home game against Shepshed Dynamo

as the Blues look to redress last week’s reverse fixture defeat. Several new names will be on the team sheet and a few more familiar

names will be a step closer to full fitness, Neil Reynolds included, and he said: “It’s all change, and I’m very excited, as looking at the team on . paper I’m hoping Shepshed will have a very unpleasant surprise. “Last Saturday we only had five players who had been in the squad

the week before against Gresley, and we were ringing around until mid night Friday for replacements - it was really all hands to the pump, with strong support from reserve team boss Bill Stell. “To say I was disappointed in the four players who let us down was a n '

understatement, but I accept that’s football and I wish them all well” He added: “I am very excited by the squad of players we are develop

ing. I am enjoying my time at Clitheroe and getting a real buzz from it, and I hope I can continue to play part in the team’s progression.”

“People are aware that we have

turned the club around during the last four weeks off the pitch, and we are adamant that we will turn it around on the pitch too.” UniBorid Premier Division side Burscough is the blueprint, a village team that has half the potential fan base of Clitheroe, yet has nurtured young players through the ranks, won the FA 'Trophy in 2003 and enjoyed: an excellent run in the FA Cup, b a t ing League One Gillingham. The most important thing now,

though, is this Saturday’s home game against Shepshed Dynamo, and the new-look CUtheroe side, led by caretaker manager Mark Smitheringale and player-coach PaulStansfield. ., A 5-0 defeat away to the same side

last Saturday saw a makeshift side take to the field, having seen several, of Lawson’s signings pull out at the last minute, and Gamer would like. to thank those that stepped in at short notice: “I’ve got to thank the

seven young men that made their debuts and helped the club out. “I’m proud of all of them and I’m

sure they’re better for the experi ence) None of them let us down.” This week Clitheroe have made

■ four new signings, helped largely by Accrington Stanley.' Joining Scott Priestley, who played on Saturday, from the Con-

: ference side is 20-year-old speedy right-winger Danny Melling. Stanley have also put Clitheroe in

touch with 19-year-old striker Andy Fowler. Recently released by Ever- ton, Fowler is looking to earn a pro fessional contract with John Cole man, and the Blues have agreed to monitor his progress as the Uni- Bond League is far more competi tive than Stanley’s reserve team. They will be joined by 26-year-old

ex-Harrogate Town player James Featherstone, who is apparently a strong centre forward or centre half who has had League experience vvith Scunthorpe and is a product of

Blackburn Rovers’ Academy. Veteran centre half Wa3me Had

dock, who was the cornerstone of Bamber Bridge’s'success in the 1990s, and has also been at Stanley, has also come on board. ■ He hasn’t played for 12 months,

but Gamer says his past perform ances make him a worthy gamble. Meanwhile, tonight sees the fol

low-up meeting to last month’s cri sis talla at the club house. Billed as a special general meet

ing, where changes to the club’s pres^ ent rules and committee personnel can be discussed and voted on. Gar ner and the committee ■will be laying bare how the club has restored bal ance behind the scenes. Decisions are no longer taken

lightly, emphasised by the commit tee’s new attention to detail, and Garner said: “We’ve a new public address system up and miming, and things like that we couldn’t have dreamed about four weeks ago. “Even items like pairs of socks for

the first team kit bag, which we bought this week, these things are discussed and every penny is accounted for.” And he says a great deal of thanks

has to go to treasurer Andrew Jack- son: “We have now stabilised finan cially and the books are in pristine

■ order thanks to Andrew. We have seen a massiye turnaround and he now has everything in immaculate fashion.” The meeting starts at

7-30 p.m. and, with the yellow voucher at the top of this page. Banana News is again offering discount for Saturday’s game at Shawbridge, kick-off 3 p.m.

FAROKH Engineer, the former India and Lan cashire star, has agreed to become the first President of Whalley Cricket Club. . Da'vid Westwood, chair

man of Whalley, was absolutely thrilled that Farokh had accepted his invitation: “The 2005 sea son saw a renaissance in Whalley’s fortunes and Farokh played his part in making that happen.

: “He presented the prizes

in July, following, the match against the Crur

. saders touring side, and he was the guest speaker at the club’s annual dinner at Ewood Park in September. “Farokh was the profes

sional at Whalley for the 1979 season and his con tinuing involvement with the club can only be an inspiration to a ll our young cricketers.’?, ■ Farokh’s record speaks

for itse lf . In 56. Test matches between 1962 and 1976, he scored over 3,000 runs and claimed over 100 vict im s as f irs t choice wicketkeeper for India. He was the first Indian

Test cricketer to be offered a professional contract by four counties, but he opted for Lancashire and, after retiring with four Gillette Cup wins, three John Player Sunday League titles and a County Cham pionship runners-up medal, he was appointed a vice president of the coun ty in recognition of his outstanding contribution. His favourite recollec

tion of Whalley was bowl ing his leg spin, but that will never compare with s t i l l.h o ld in g the world record for the fastest Test century ever scored. Against a West Indies

bowling at ta ck of Wes Hall, Charlie Griffith,; Roy Gilchrist, Gary Sobers and Lance Gibbs, Farokh com pleted his century with a ^ i six off the first ball .after ®
