Young cellist will take solo spot
TALENTED young cellist Alex Barnes, pictured, will play the solo in Schumann’s Cello Concerto on Sunday evening at Burn ley Mechanics Theatre, with the Burnley. Symphony Orchestra. •Trained at Chetham’s School of Music in
Manchester and now in his final year a t the Royal Academy of Music in London, Alex combines musical sen s itiv ity and an assured technique and will give a memo- . rable performance of this lovely work. Orchestra chairman Judith David said:
“Alex played in our orchestra as a young boy and it is very satisfying to have him back as an accomplished soloist.” The concert starts with Johann Strauss’s
exhilarating “Die Fledermaus” Overture, full of lively Viennese tunes. Elgar’s well known “Enigma Variations” fills the sec ond half with its portraits of the compos er’s wife and friends, including the famom “Nimrod” variation. The orchestra is led by Clare Corner and
conducted by Chris Gill and the concert starts at 7-30 p.m. Tickets are on sale from the Mechanics Box Office (01282 664400) or can be purchased on the door.

Fancy a high-dive for the hospice?
IF you have ever wanted to take a parachute jump, the East Lancashire Hospice is waiting to hear from you. All it asks is that a mini
mum amount of sponsor ship money is raised in order for the jumper to jump absolutely free (from £290 depending on th e type of jump chosen) and, in-return, the hospice will receive an average donation of £140. In addition to this, every
extra pound raised over the minimum goes directly to the hospice. . There are a number of
ways of jumping. Volun teers can experience the
