Clitheroe 422324 (Editorial), 422323 (Advertising), Burnley 422331 (Classified) Chris reviews a classic

THE children’s novel “Black Beauty” inspired one young Clitheroe library user to write a winning review. Chris Sumner’s review of the

book, written by Anna Sewell, made him the Relay Readers’ champion reviewer. The Relay Readers scheme,

which is run by Lancashire County Library Service, encour ages young people to read more books and then write down their thoughts about them on a spe cial review sheet. The scheme recognises

monthly winners for the best review. Chris (11), of Pendleton,

explained why he liked the book, which is told from the horse’s point of view: “I t is a classic

Easter arrivals

a hit at school PENDLE Primary School pupils were given the chance to meet two newborn lambs this Easter. Before the school broke up

for the holidays, teaching assistant Mrs Gill Whitehead brought the lambs into school from her family farm to show reception children. The children made a circle

around the active new- bomers, who could be studied at close quarters when they stopped still. Mrs Whitehead was on hand to answer lots of questions from the group of extremely curious four-year- olds.

All geared up to go!

THE popular fitness duo of Amanda Townsend and Karen Brayshaw will be unveiling their London Marathon outfits dur ing a fund-raising day at Booths supermar ket, Clitheroe. The two friends, of

Siddows Avenue, have attracted a storm of media interest since they launched their fit ness campaign to train for the annual event. They are hoping to raise £10,000 for Marie

Curie Cancer Care. Mother-of-three

Amanda has lost five- and-a-half stone dur ing her fitness regime. Karen, who works for Kibble Valley Commu nity Transport, has dropped to a dress size 14.

Their weekly train

ing sessions include jogging 51 miles and swimming 100 lengths. The pair will be appearing in Booths from 8-30 a.m. on Sat urday, April 9th.

story which has everything - happiness, sadness, excitement, adventure and a good ending. “I liked it because I think it

taught a valuable lesson about horses’ feelings and why we shouldn’t be cruel to them.” Chris, who is a pupil at Bar-

row Primary School, said his most memorable characters are Ginger and Merrylegs, because each one goes through good and bad times. He explained that the author

wrote the book in 1877 at a time when Victorian England treated animals badly and she wanted them to be kinder, so she hoped th a t the story would remind people to treat animals with care and respect.

New screening programme will be available to Ribble Valley mums

nant women in East Lancashire will have the opportunity of Triple Serum Testing between 16 weeks and one day and 19 weeks of preg nancy. The test determines a woman's

amniocentesis or other diagnostic tests. The new screening programme is

in line with recommendations from the National Institute for Clinical Excellence (NICE) which says that all women should be offered screen ing for Down's with a test that has a 60% detection rate. This would reduce the number of

women who go on to have an amnio centesis or other invasive tests unnecessarily. The Triple Serum Test has a 65-

70% detection rate. I t was intro duced in September 2004 for all

pregnant women attending Burnley General Hospital and is soon to be introduced at Queen's Park Hospital following funding from the local Pri mary Care Trusts. L

for Women's Health said: "This is a great step forward for women and their families. The Triple Serum test is to be made available to all pregnant women in East Lancashire and, together with the advice and support from midwives and other health staff, will enable women to make informed choices about their pregnancy."
