Birdwatchers celebrate their club’s 50th birthday

LANCASHIRE’S longest estab lished birdwatchers’ club will cel ebrate its 50th birthday in Clitheroe on Monday. The East Lancashire Ornitholo

gists' Club (ELOC) was founded in April 1955 and is the oldest bird club in the county. Its Golden Jubilee Meeting will take place at 7-30 p.m. on Monday in the Lecture Theatre at Clitheroe Royal Grammar School Sixth Form Centre, in York Street.

It is an open meeting to which all interested birders in East Lancashire are Invited. Guest speaker will be Professor

Bill Hale, retired Professor of Zoolo gy at Liverpool Metropolitan Uni versity. Now resident in Formby, he was instrumental in founding the ELOC and was its first secretary while still in the Sixth Form at CRGS. He will give an illustrated lecture

entitled “A World of Waders” and is a recognised world au th o r ity on wading birds. Two other founder members also intend to be present, Mr John Watts, of Simonstone, and Mr Terry McConville, of Cliviger. These two formed a famous bird ringing partnership specialising in birds of prey. Other members from the club's

early years will also be present, including current president Mr Eric

Davis, of Trawden, who was club chairman for many years. One of the founder members was famous Lan cashire birder Edmund Battersby, from Great Harwood. He died many years ago, but his teenage grandson, Billy, is now a member and intends to be present. Anyone who wants to know more

about the club and its activities can contact its chairman, Tony Cooper, on 01200 424577.

Hospice opening doors to public

THE East Lancashire Hospice will open its doors to members of the public.on Friday, April 8th. The hospice, which has been caring for

patients and their families since June 1984, 3vill stage the open day from its premises on Park Lee Road, Blackburn, from 2 p.m. to 3 p.m. Since 1984, the hospice staff have looked

after more than 13,100 people suffering from cancer within the communities of the Ribble Valley, Blackburn, Darwen and Hyndbum. It is hoped that the open day will raise

awareness of the services that are available and how these have been developed to offer the full and comprehensive range of pallia tive needs offered totally free of charge to the region. The event will include a welcome, brief history of the hospice, information on the services available, followed by a tour of the hospice facilities.

Janet Alston, clinical leader at the hospice

explained: “People’s perceptions are that the hospice only provides a valuable end of life service. “However the fact is that the hospice is

able to offer services and support at every point along the cancer journey from newly diagnosed through to bereavement and beyond. We provide many other services and we are offering people the chance to come along and to see and experience for them selves the exceptional services that are avail able.” If you would like an invitation to attend

the hospice open day, call reception on 01254 342810 between 8-30 a.m. and 5 p.m. The receptionist will take your name and tele phone number and confirm the arrival times. To avoid disappointment you must book your places early, as numbers will be restricted.
