toughest opponents of the season when they played defending champions Black burn Northern A in the First Division of the East Lan cashire Open Tennis League. There was a debut partner ship at number one for Whal-

ley in Richard Lambert and 11-year-old Connor Bunting, while regulars Danny Roff and Mathew Cuynes played at niunber two. The latter had some close matches, narrowly losing in straight sets. The results for Whalley’s

number one pairing were a little clearer cut, but Bunting showed why he is one of the outstanding players of his age in the county. In the Second Division,

Whalley B met their col leagues from Whalley C, and there were some close fought matters and excellent tennis played. The B first pairing of Guy

(fi^.

Purves and Gordon Pimper- ton played the C team’s first pairing of Tom Ormerod and James Burke, and the Cs took the first set 7-5 after trailing 5-2, but then Idst the second 6-1. The final set saw the Bs triumph 6-4. Meanwhile the C second

pairing of David Lynch and ' Andrew Cuynes overcame the B pairing of Paul Jenkins and Peter Hitchen in two closely-fought sets. In the second rubber

First silverware for Grindleton

Carlelon.........................0 Grindlelon

...............3

SEVEN games into this season, Grindleton only had one point to their name, but now they have the club’s first-ever silverware after winning the Morrison Cup final. . Grindleton secured the

cup with a defensive master e d . ■ Carleton started the bet

ter side and had the majori ty of first half possession, yet created very bttle in the final third of the pitch. Lloyd in the Grindleton

goal was barely tested as his well-marshalled back four- kept Carleton at arm’s , length. Just 10 minutes before the

break, Grindleton strung several passes together to release Ashley Bennett down the right, whose pin point cross was met by So)tt Fielding to put the locals ahead. . Minutes later, Carleton’s defence got in a mix-up and gifted an open net to Darren Barrow to see Grindleton 2- 0 up at half-time. After the break, Grindle-

ton’s Scott Fielding added the final nail to Carleton’s coffin with a well-taken shot past the keeper. Carleton huffed and

dra Frost won one set and lost three, while Gordon Pimper ton joined new member Jack ie Norris, sharing four sets with their opponents. H CLITHEROE A made it nine points from a possible 10 ■ on Saturday when they bat tled to a deserved 4-0 win away at Accrington A. In a change of pairings,

Roger Ravenscroft joined Derek Parrott and they quickly meshed to prove too strong for llic top Accrington pair, winning 6-2,6-2. On the other court, Phil

• Mileham teamed up with Daniel Bush, and the pairing started well, moving into any early lead. They were then pegged buck, but managed to hold on to the first set 7-5, and their class told in the sec ond set which they look 6-2. In the return rubbers,

RavcnscrofI and Parrott again just kept it tight and cased through with another 6-2,6-2 victory, which gave them ample time to .sit and watch another trademark Clilheroe marathon on the other court. . Mileham and Bush

appeared to be heading for the first set, but then tran-

. spired to leave tbe door open for their opponents. This only served to sting

them into action, and they, reeled off the next two sets in

: relatively convincing fashion 6-2, 6-3. The 4-0 scorelinc gives Clilheroe a vital five

-points and helps them towards a lop two finish.

puffed but they couldn’t blow Grindleton’s defence down, as the locals sealed victory. B FOR most of the season, Hurst Green Reserves have been living in the shadow of their first team, who have been storming towards the East Lancashire League Premier Division title. However, on Saturday it

was their chance to take the spotlight when they clinched the Reserve Divi sion ’Trophy with a resound ing 7-2 victory over Rawten- stall. , Despite a nervy start in

which keeper Wayne Addi- cott pulled off a marvellous save, the Green’s strikers Tim-Craven and Adam

Lakeland soon got going and both weighed in with hat-tricks. Robert Embery completed the scoring. The team has been man

aged by Barry Bolton, who was naturally delighted, especially as the nucleus of the team has been local lads. Meanwhile, Hurst

Green’s first team took a giant leap towards the title when they beat their nearest rivals Goodshaw United. . A 3-1 win was achieved

with a very good team per formance against an extremely physical Good shaw side, which included several players with North West Counties experience. Alan Goar, Dan Walker

and Simon Tipton were the goal scorers, and all the back four were outstanding. Tonight there is the final

of the East Lancashire League President’s Cup, between Rimington and Hurst Green, which should be a tasty encounter. The game is at Clitheroe FC’s Shawbridge, kick-off 7 p.m., bar and refreshments will be available. Wolves Under 12s Red ..2 Pendle Forest ............... 0 THE Wolves gained revenge for their cup final penalty heartache to put the destiny of the league title back in their own hands. Late in the first half

Wolves took the lead when Eastwood bundled the ball home after a goalmouth scramble. After the break, goal line

clearances from Ainsworth and Bailey prevented Pen- dle from scoring, but star man Hopkins sealed the wui \vith a superb free kick. Todnmrden SC ............. 0 Wolves Under 12s Red , .4 A BRACE from Eastwood helped earn a convincing win. Thompson crossed for

B ROYAL British Legion ended a successful Clitheroe and District Snooker League sea son at the presentation evening. Hosted at their own venue, they collected

both their First Division and Team Knock out titles. And it could have been triple success, as

Stephen Kerr and Barry Watson were pipped to the Doubles Knockout crown by Mark Holmes and Carl Drinkwater of Low ^ Moor. However, there was some silverware for

Kerr, who secured the First Division’s high break prize with a run of 89. Catholic Club scooped the Second Divi-

aon title ahead of Police, while Conservative A finished as runners-up in the First Divi sion.

the Singles title ahead of Conservative B’s Paul Blackburn, while Billington A were pipped in the final of the team competition. Knally, Malcolm Wensley’s knock of 58

strikes in the second half, pouncing on a poor defen sive clearance, before turn ing in the rebound from a Clarkson free kick. AkzoA ........... . . . . . . . . 6 Wolves Under 1 6 s ..........0 THE superior passing game of Akzo proved too much for the Clitheroe side at Dar- wen’s Anchor Ground. Wolves’ forwards and

midfield players lost posses sion far too easily, and Akzo punished them for their lack of composure on the ball. Two g o ^ were deflected,

leaving skipper James Scriv- en with no chance. Globe............................ 3 Wolves Under 1 6 s .........3 WOLVES grabbed a point with the last kick of the match in a nail-biter. The locals dominated and

created excellent chances, which went begging, and it came as some relief when Dean Gudgeon finished with a super left-foot chip from 20 ymris. Globe continued to push.

half-time, Adrian Thomas latched on to a long through ball to slot home and give Clitheroe the advantage. In the second half, the

Globe centre forward was quickest to react to a poor clearance and finish with aplomb. Globe then went in front,

but Adam Gatens played in James Scriven on the right hand side of the box, and he smashed a tremendous right-foot shot in from the tightest of angles. Wolves Under 12 Girls .10 Lylham YMCA ..............0 AN early goal from Niamh McCarthy opened the floodgates for the Wolves. After Wolves keeper

Rebecca Edwardson sav^ a penalty, McCarthy and Helen Conlon both score hat-tricks to round off the rout.

B ROEFIELD retained the Blackburn and District Badminton League Wilson Plate with victory over Clitheroe C at Audley. Clitheroe were desperate for silvenvare,

having failed to gain promotion from the Third Division, and knew they had a diffi cult match to play when they took on recent ly promoted !tofield. In the early stages of the match, Roefield

A took a slight Irad, and in spite of the added handicap, looked as though they would turn the tables comfortably. But as the match progressed, things start

ed to turn in favour of Clitheroe. The Third Division ade had needed to call

on the services of one of their lady players though, and this did not help their cause as she had only played once before this season. And as the match continued into the

mixed doubles, Roefield played their best badminton of the night and finished the match just 21 aces behind, which was a remarkable achievement, but with the added handicap, took victory by 53 acto. This saw the club retain the Wilson Plate

for a second year as their B teani won it last year, which, coupled with promotion, has ended an excellent season. -

ner with an aggregate score of 164-24- 140, to finish bn four-under par - which was enough for victory by three strokes. Paul Greenwood finished a close sec

ond with a 153-10-143 total after two steady rounds having led after day one. Saturday’s overall winner was Paul

'Earnshaw with a score of 87-17-70 after a card play-off with Ted Barn- borough. Consolation for Bamborough being that his score was good enough to take the Division One prize. EAST Lancashire Golf Association representative and former ELGA cap tain David Wilson won a place in the Clitheroe team for the ELGA Handi cap Trophy, to be played at Clitheroe GC later in the month. Gary Speak recovered from a late

Friday night out to play the round of the season to date and return 71-3-68 to take first place in the ELGA and Castle Cup qualifier - one shot ahead of Wilson, Paul Hamer and Tim Stan ley who will make up the Clitheroe team.

. Peter Catlow was the unlucky one returning a nett 70 and will be reserve for the big day. Martin Cane’s 74 was the best gross of the day.

• Peter Greaves took top spot in Divi

sion Two from the consistent Mike Ainsworth who edged tonsorial artist Gary Moore’s into third on the cards as both returned nett 71s. Dave Wood- worth (93-21-72) maintained his early- season form to take the fourth prize. ~

Colin’s crown

COLIN T. Elliott emerged as the win ner of the Spring Trophy at Whalley

Golf Club after a three-way card play off.

Elliott’s back nine score of 38 and a

total score of 80-10-70 saw him tri umph over club secretary Stuart Daw son (81-1-70) and Kevin Walker (86- 16-70). Steve Hill (89-15-74) took the second division prize. On Sunday, in glorious sunshine, the

first of the season's mixed Texas scrambles took place. There was some excellent golf

played with the winning team of Steve Shoreman, Mike Conroy, Gill Grimshaw and Jane Smedley return ing a score of 64-7.2-56.8. Despite an attempt to have their

team disqualified from second place for leaving the course at the 10th hole to buy ice creams from the van at Spring Wood, Steve Hill, Roger Altham, Joyce Andrew and Lesley Lohou were confirmed in second place with 67-6.1-60.9. All six Whalley members who

entered The Observer Cup knockout competition, Colin T. Elliott, Martin Foulds, Roger Altham, Edward Foulds, Paul Barrett and Andrew Thompson, have all won their matches and progressed to the second round of the competition.

Match made

MATCHMAKER Marilyn Fletcher found Jane Chandler a partner in the shape of Alan Houghton for the club ladies’ invitation greensomes at Clitheroe GC on Sunday. And they proved to be an ideal pair

ing as they shot a nett 65.4 to take first prize. Lady captain Gill W'lghtman pre
