’s ‘baby’ scoops top award
TWO pioneering health initiatives - one led by a Consultant Midwife from Clitheroe - were winners at a major regional awards ceremony. The East Lancashire Hospitals scooped a total of four awards -
two
category winners and two runners-up - at the Cumbria and Lancashire Strategic Health Authority Achieve ment Awards Ceremony, winning a total of £12,000 to invest in patient care. The awards are presented in recog
nition of dedicated, original and imaginative care given by health and social care staff to their patients throughout Cumbria and Lancashire. Out of 136 applicants, only 24 were shortlisted, each representing a devel opment in services that has made a real and proven difference to patients. One of the East Lancashire Trust’s
two winning projects was “Empower ing Women: Engaging Communi ties”, a project led by Clitheroe Con sultant Midwife Sheena Byrom. Figures show that 36% of the
women who use maternity services at Blackburn’s Queen’s Park Hospital are from South Asian heritage. The project enables these women to engage with maternity services in a number of ways. Sheena and her team set out to involve local mothers from the community as volunteers, work ing alongside midwives, to provide support with every aspect of care from breast feeding to post-natal depression. There are currently 30 volunteers with maternity services and several more are awaiting train
ing- Some volunteers have become paid
or permanent staff within the unit, some are now training to become mid wives themselves, some are providing complementary care, such as hand and foot massage, some are advising teenage parents and others support ing women with diabetes. This excep tional project is using a high level of involvement of women who are tradi tionally hard to reach and it is having a very real impact on a community whose needs have so often been ignored. The second category-winning proj
ect was “Promoting Bra Confidence for Women who have undergone Breast Surgery”. I t involves breast cancer specialist nurses in East Lan cashire working in partnership with major retail stores to train lingerie staff to assist women who have had
breast cancer surgery. A publicity campaign took place
during Breast Cancer Awareness Month where local women were informed of the stores that had received the training via a promotion day and articles in the local media. The aim of the project was to give
the store assistants working in lingerie departments the confidence, sensitiv ity and practical knowledge to be able to meet the needs of women who have undergone breast surgery. This was done via partnership working, educa tion and training. One of the team members on the “Bra Confidence” project is Eileen Flatley, of Clitheroe. The East Lancashire Trust also
won two runners-up for projects aimed at setting new standards in coronary care and improving commu nication between health professionals and their patients. Christine Kirk, chairman of the
East Lancashire Hospitals NHS Trust, said: “I am delighted that a number of projects to improve the health care of the people of East Lan cashire have been given recognition in this way. The awards reflect a lot of hard
work by many staff and I would like to thank them all for their commit ment and dedication.” Each of the winners will receive
£5,000, and the runners-up £1,000, which will be used for patient care, to
expand and develop the award-win ning work that staff have been doing. 9 Another local winner at the
awards ceremony was a specialist “joints and bones” clinic run by the Hyndbum and Ribble Valley Prima ry Care Trust. Based at Accrington Victoria Com
munity Hospital, the clinic has been established to provide patients \vith musculo-skeletal problems with an alternative approach to the tradition al types of service that they have had access to. I t sees people with hip, knee, foot and ankle problems, as well as upper limb conditions and acute low back pain problems. The service treats patients referred from Ribble Valley and Hyndbum CPs. Mark Wilkinson, chief executive of
Hyndburn and Ribble Valley PCT, said: “This is fantastic news for a team who are committed, innovative and who really put patients at the centre of everything they do. This award is well-deserved and I am delighted for them.” Our picture shows consultant mid
wife Sheena Byrom (far left) and her award-winning team of Lynn Wis- sett, Michelle Atkin with baby Jayne, Nazra Khan, Jeannette-Kirk and David Parkinson, (s)
