Johnston Press is offering up to ten bursaries for aspiring journalists who may not normally get a chance to gain the right qualifications.
The aim o f these awards is to assist students who face financial hardship in attaining the qualifications needed to pursue a career in journalism.
We are keen to encourage graduates and school leavers from diverse .social and ethnic backgrounds - particularly those from minority ethnic backgrounds - as this is an area currently recognised as being under-represented in newspaper journalism. We are committed to oftering the majority o f the awards to applicants from this group.*

You could be one o f the recipients o f our bursary sclieme. You might want to .study for a
Po.st Graduate Diploma in Journalism at a leading university or go on a college training programme, recognised and organised under the auspices o f tlie National Council for the Training o f Journalists.
The awards will range from £3,000 to £7.500, depending on the programme, and arc designed to pay for the course, books, and exam fees as well as going towards your subsistence allowance.

Although the bursaries do-not guarantee jo b s with the group, applicants will be considered along with other candidates for a position on one o f our newspapers once the course has been completed. We will also organise work experience during your period o f study.-
We will select applicants for interviews based on the following criteria. Ideally you will:
• be o f stmduatc calibre (the minimum qualification for journalism is five GCSE passes (grades A-C) - one o f which must be in English) or have already graduated. li\’e permanently in the United Kingdom, ideally in the circulation area o f one o f ou r newspapers show a passionate interest in current affairs, people, places and events be able to write fluently with good spelling, grammar and punctuation have undergone some basic work experience in journalism need the rinancial support to progress your citreer
