A nail-biting to girls’ footb
. By Duncan Smith
A NAIL-BITING final provided a fitting climax to Ribble Valley’s first Girls’ Football Festival. Organised by Ribble Valley
Borough Council, the festival was staged at Clitheroe’s Roe- field playing fields and involved six teams from five of the area’s primary schools. The six-a-side teams all
faced each other, playing six minutes each way, in a compe tition that was noted for its fair play, high levels of skill and competitiveness. , Winning through to the
final were the Alston Lane Pri mary ‘A’ team, from Lon- gridge, and the team from Waddington and West Brad ford Primary. Their hard-fought and
thrilling encounter ended in a nil-nil draw after extra time and was decided on a nerve- jangling sudden death penalty shootout, with the Longridge
side emerging as champions. Both the finalists will go on
to represent Ribble Valley in the Lancashire-Youth Games, to be held at Lancaster next
' month. Other schools taking part in
the festival were S t James,. Clitheroe, Whalley Primary and St Mary’s, Mellon Festival organiser and the council’s community sports
, coach Shirley Veevers said: “We are delighted at how this first Festival of Girls Football went. We hope to make it an annual event and get more local schools involved next year. “All the teams played really
well and the competition proved it isn’t just boys who can play great football.” Our pictures show the two
winning teams. The top pic ture shows Alston Lane A (rear) with Waddington and West Bradford, and right, all the teams taking part in the inaugural event, (s)
