Daphne enjoys great season

DAPHNE Dawson had a season to remember at Whalley Golf Club. When the ladies’ section

held their annual presenta tion on Thursday, she was awarded four top prizes. Her haul was made up

of the Longworth Cup, the High Task Trophy gross award, the Birdie Tree and the Silver Cup. Two other lady mem

ty Trophy, the Eclectic Cup and the Bronze Medal. And Jane Boxall was

awarded the High Task Trophy nett award, the Margaret Lightfoot Tro phy and the Handicap

Cup. The final competition of

the 2005 season at Whal ley Golf Club, The Hang over Stakes was contested the day after the annual mens’ dinnner. Ed Gierat emerged as

the winner with 37 points. With the conclusion of

CLITHEROE could be without leading goal scor er Gary Jackson until after Christmas as early diagno sis suggests he has dam aged ligaments in his right

knee. Jackson has scored 13

goals this season and shown great form to earn a contract, but he twisted his knee twice in Tuesday night’s UniBond League Challenge Cup victory over Woodley Sports - the second time needing assis tance off the pitch - and looks likely to Ije out for at least a month. This is a “huge blow” to

side and netted having enjoyed recent spells at Barnoldswick Town and Ramsbottom United. The right-wing man left

manager Tommy Lawson but he is working on the worst case scenario: “I t is perhaps a little early to say for sure but according to Jim (Ruddick - Clitheroe’s osteopath) it’s looking like ligament dam age so we’re fearing the

the Blues before the season got underway to improve his match fitness. Tuesday night’s 4-2 win was his first game this term for the locals and Lawson was pleased to welcome him back, he said: “The door is never shut on anyone and if we can get players to play the way we want them to then there will always be a place for them in the side. “I ’ve been told that

worst. It could mean he’ll be out between three to six weeks which is a huge

blow.” This bad news came on

the same night that fellow fans’ favourite Chris Whit- tin'gham returned to the

we’ve got an extra 10% out of certain players this season and I hope that the same will apply to Whitty. I never got a chance to fully assess him the first time around so we’ll be learning about one anoth er over the coming weeks.” Both Jackson and Whit-

tingham helped Clitheroe to the North West Coun

soc

ties First Division title two season’s ago. A third player from th a t side, defender Russell Clarke, is going out on loan to Colne to give the North West Counties League side the benefit of his experience. And Lawson believes

the move can only benefit Clarke and Clitheroe in the long term: “Russell is too good for our reserve team and we want to keep him playing first team football. Colne showed an interest and it can only benefit him and us. “He is still a Clitheroe

player and should we need him he will be ready to slot

back in.” Clubs higher up in the

pyramid structure are also iDeginning to take note of performances made by Clitheroe players as 20- year-old centre-back George Melling has had seven days put on him by Conference North side Lancaster City. “George will be speak

ing to Lancaster on Thurs day (today). We’ve given permission as we’d never hold any player back and I’ll be checking up on the issue on Friday morning,”

said Lawson. “We’re hoping he does

n’t go but if he does we wish him well - the deci sion is George’s.” The Clitheroe manager

won’t be hanging on the phone for an answer though, as he has already put into action a contin gency plan if Melling decides to leave. “I can’t wait until the

weekend to see if I ’m going to be a centre-half short so I’ve acted to cover all eventualities by lining up an experienced 30-year- old defender with over 200 games in the UniBond league. I expect him to sign on Thursday (tonight).” Turning his attention to

Saturday’s league home game against in-form side Stocksbridge Park Steels, who narrowly lost on penalties to UniBond Pre mier Division side Ossett Town - the Blues’ oppo nents in the next round of the FA Trophy - he won’t be taking the game lightly in view of last Saturday’s 2-0 away defeat against Belper Town. the final event, the results of the competitions which are based on overall per formances throughout the season could be deter mined. Kevin Walker was

ford and Wear It Pink day at Clitheroe GC raised £150 for Breast Cancer Research. County captain Chris

Stokes topped the silver division with 35 points, finishing two points ahead of Kris Baldwin with Irene Hinks (30) in third place. Gilly Farthing (37) took

the bronze division with 37 points after a card play-off with Diane Buttle. Pat Murray (36) was third. Kath 'I'ownley (17) won

the silver division of the Turkey Shoot, while Karen Stanworth (16) won the bronze division.
