Mountaineers see summit in the mist

A SMALL but enthusiastic group of Clitheroe Moun taineering Club members braved heavy early-morning

I showers for their day meet in Calderdale, to climb to the

' summit of S to od ley Pike from the centre of Hebden

Bridge. Crossing both the canal and

the railway, they followed indis tinct pathways to reach the Pen nine Way bridleway before climbing over moorland to the summit. Here the gigantic monument,

«

built in 1815 to commemorate victory in the Napoleonic wars, was hidden by mist until the

members were just a few metres away.

Despite the lack of a view, the

party groped their way up the pitch black internal spiral stair case to the viewing platform just to say they had been there, then returned to the shelter of the entrance for lunch. Continuing south along the

Pennine Way, members proceed ed to Withens Gate and Withens Clough reservoir, before return ing to Hebden Bridge via Bell House and Erringden moors. The weather for the club’s

weekend meet in Coniston proved more favourable, allowing members to enjoy rock climbs on Dow Crag, scrambles on Great

How and also long mountain walks and runs in the Coniston Fells. A communal meal, with cours

es provided by the various club members, was enthusiastically received on the Saturday evening. The club’s next indoor event

will be the annual general meet ing at Clitheroe Cricket Club on Thursday, November 17th, beginning at 8 p.m. A family meet at the Rhydd

Ddu climbing hut in North Wales will be held tomorrow and Saturday. Further details can be

obtained by phoning 01200 428766.

MEMBERS of Ribble Valley Youth Council travelled to London to meet the area’s MP. “It was great to see a group of youngsters

from the Ribble Valley so interested in politics and so keen to debate with me such important issues,” commented Nigel Evans MP. “I asked them if they have had any ques tions and we spent the next hour debating

issues such as the problems they face with the cost of rural transport in the Ribble Valley, the potential ban on smoking and the Child Support Agency. “I was also delighted to be able to give them

a tour of the House of Commons.” Pictured are members of the council outside the Houses of Parliament, (s)
