RIMINGTON completed the double over Oswaldtwistle on Saturday, but it wasn’t as easy as the scoreline suggests. On an uneven pitch, and with a fierce

.wind, flowing football was almost impos sible to achieve. Martin Lawson opened the scoring

with a thundering 35-yard free kick, before Trevor Watkins latched onto a Tom O’Neill throughball and placed a shot neatly into the corner, i Rimington had Kershaw to thank for

keeping the score at 2-0, but O’Neill then extended the lead when his corner curled straight in. The home side came more and more

linto the game after the restart, with, DaveiWhalley hitting the bar and Ker- shaw'saving at the feet of an onrushing striker. ■ '

’ However, his best stop was a superb

one-handed tip around the post from a shot that looked destined for the corner. Player-manager Terry Braithwaite

rang the changes in the second half, and substitute Coulter raced clear, rounded the keeper and squared for fellow replace ment Carter to fire home. Rimington now face two crucial games

in the coming weeks, following up Satur day’s clash with Goodshaw United with a Presidents Cup clash at Oswaldtwistle.

solation as the Under 16s wont down 3-1 to Clitheroe Wolves, and despite a depleted squad, the Under 11 Girls were unlucky to go down 3-2 to the same opposition. Sophie Hindle and Holly

Stevenson were both on target, with Hollie Ormonde the play er of the match.

midfield, and their number nine made no mistake with a strike from just outside the area. Waddington had chance after cliancc,

falling to Robert Lloyd, Peter Fletcher and John Leaver, but they proved unable to penetrate the Cowling goal. I3ut Leaver, back from injury, was out

standing as ho caused lots of problems for the home defence to allow Lloyd to grab an equaliser from a corner. The locals continued to go close before

half-time, with their best opportunity falling to Martin Crane, but eventually went into break level at 1-1. In the second half, kicking downhill,

-drive made it 4-1 to-Waddington, and Cowling struck back with a second goal to restore some honour.

Waddington soon had the game won with another well-taken header from Fletcher after some inspired play, before Lloyd found the net again. Adrian Hirst’s solo run and 25-yard

Rivals gain revenge win

Waddinylon Reserves ........................2

Ilellifield Reserves . . . . . . . . . . . . . 3 AFTER an impressive victory over the same team last \veek, Waddington crashed out of the cup at the quarter final stage as a determined Hellifield gained revenge. Both sides started well, but good

defending and goalkceping meant the locals had to wait until the half hour mark before Steven Holden broke through to score with a neat shot into the bottom corner. However, Hellificld hit back before

half-time to draw the scores level. After the break the Yorkshire side

came out the stronger team, and were soon in front with a header from a long throw. Each side than had the opportunity to

convert penalties, with Paul Tierney scoring Waddington’s to make it 3-2, but Hellifield held onto their lead despite some strong pressure from the locals, who must now look to improve on their league form with only seven games remaining.

Grindleton battle back

GRINDLETON Reserves battled their way to a 6-4 victory at Yorkshire rivals Bradley in the quarter-final of the Craven Second Division League Cup. The locals were 3-0 up after 15 min

utes, with an opportunist goal by Ben nett and two well struck shots from Williams. At 3-0, Grindlcton should have had no

trouble winning the match, but by half time Bradley had levelled at 3-3. Things then went from bad to worse
