Highways Office from Riddings Lane to Clitheroe - there is plenty of space off the A59 by-pass. With some imagination and good planning a good car park could be made. I t would be only a five minute walk for all those who park on the streets for more than two hours a day. There is a bus travelling every 15 minutes to Calder-

stones. I t is empty most of the day. Schoolchildren should use this to Tree the school run. Lancashire County Council appears to want the

and now there is a hole the size of a tennis ball next to the grate, which is next to the badly cracked subsided pavement where one is expected to stand to cross the road. And where do the teachers at Whalley Primary

School, which is again about to be further extended, park? Whalley is an utter disgrace for those residents who

live centrally. I t is time all the councils provided those who pay council tax - many more than £1,0000 - a quality environment. Those who pollute our streets all day should receive

nothing.

Have a little more respect

for we single mothers DUE to unforeseen circumstances, I became a single mum and was faced with two choices - stay at homo and receive income support or go to work and earn my own money. I chose to go back to work and I appreciate the help

I get due to my low income, but I resent the fact that I am sometimes made to feel small and unworthy. Shouldn’t society encourage single mums to go back

to work? I feel a little respect is due to us working mums,

rather than looking down on us. I t ’s hard being a single mum at the best of times and

it’s even harder when you are seen as a scrounger. What more can I do?

they will uever succeed THE New Year did not get off to quj; the start I expected.

1 First morning back after the holidayand a letter

bomb exploded in my constituency offic Fortunately my staff quickly put out the fire anlno one was

injured. But the device left the office in a rift mess and |

some correspondence was burnt to a cip. Any con stituents who have not received replies t otters post ed late last year should write to me agaii >r telephone my office. I want to thank everyone for all the miy messages

of support. My thanks too go to the eirgency ser vices, especially the police, for the pro ssional way they handled the incident. Democracy is too important to al w terrorist

groups and their apologists to bomb ui rito submis sion. That is why this June’s Local Counl and Euro pean Election double-header is so impoi int. A recent Government announcemt that the

North West will have an all-postal hallo ihould boost turnout at these elections. And ligh turnout will give the far right BNP and ;her extrem ists less chance of winning ai of the nine Euro-seats at stake in this regie, This will be good news for de ocracy - and
