Great start to New Year
CLITHEROE Badminton A team enjoyed a good start to the New Year with a comprehensive 15-1 victory over lowly First Division rivals Hal steads in the Blackburn and District handicapped cup competition. An interesting cup format means a
change of partners after one game is necessary in both the mixed and the levels, and this season’s handicapping system means there is all to play for in the opening mini-league matches. But in this match, the locals
stormed to their huge win with the points standing at 238 to 124, and they have to hope they have done enough to win through. Clitheroe then met Halsteads for
the second time in two .weeks, this time in a league match, and came
away with a solid 14-4 win. Good performances by Louise Bur-
rill and Mary Brass meant they came home with four wins each. And a battling performance by
Stephen Pym earned the Clitheroe player a creditable three wins, a feat also matched by Tony Bush on the day.
Meanwhile, the B team maintained P 'R f - C
Clitheroe’s good run of results into 2004 with a convincing 11-5 victory overYMCA C. This win means the locals retain
fourth spot in the second di'vision and keep their promotion hopes very much alive. Damian Evans and Sheila Perry produced the best performances of
the match with two top half wins. Lisa Fielding joined Perry in the
ladies’ doubles to ensure both players maintained their 100% record in the match.
i Cup action then saw Clitheroe B
defeat Abacus by 79 points, which should be sufficient to overcome the handicap system. Sheila Perry was again in fine form
with four wins, each with a different partner, as demanded by the cup for mat.
Stonyhurst
in last four STONYHURST College’s Under 14 rugby team came back from the brink of defeat to win through to the Lan cashire Cup Semi-Final. The locals were 14-5 down with just
10 minutes to go against Ripley St Thomas of Lancaster. The prospect of winning through
the crucial cup-tie almost seemed lost, but the Stonyhurst boys refused to give up hope. Led by captain Daniel Layzell (14),
of Hurst Green, they stepped up the pace to win by the narrowest of mar g in s -15-14. In a thrilling climax to the match,
the winning try came in the last play of the game. The Stonyhurst team will now
meet Merchant Taylor’s School, Cros by, near Liverpool, in the semi-final, at a date to be fixed.
Wolves in
the goals Iluncoal United......................... 0 Clitheroe Wolvex UlOs .................7 CLITHEROE Wolves started the year in the best possible way with a goal in the first minute, direct from a Dent corner. ‘ After this, Clitheroe took control of
the match with further goals in the first half from Dent and Ripley. In the second half, Ripley complet
ed his hat-trick, and further goals came from Le Breton and Kennerley. Ail credit to Huncoat, who kept
going to the final whistle and would have scored a consolation goal but for a fine save by Clitheroe keeper Moor- house. Man-of-the-match was Ripley,
with good, solid displays from Bow- ness and Kennerley.
Trio on target
for United BRAD COULSON, Josh Brown and Josh Ramsey were on target as Read- stone United Under 12s held Foul- ridge Minors 3-3. In a good all-round team perfor
the only phono number to bo used for confirming results is
mance, United’s Warburton League side hold out for a share of the spoils, with keeper Kamen Collinson earning the man of the match accolade. United’s Under 14s lost 5-0 to
league leaders Fulledge Colts after a lacklustre performance. Readstone trailed 4-0 at half-time,
and although there was a slight improvement in the second half, the result was never in doubt. United’s Under 11 Girls were beat
en 4-0 by Burnley. Despite the scoreline, Readstone
competed well'and deserve praise for their efforts. Sophie Hindle was the pick oftheUnited players.
