Heartbreaking defeat leaves England reeling
by Phil Simpson
THERE is no doubt about the major talking point after the first round of fixtures in Euro 2004 in Portugal. If you don't know, where have you
been for the past five days? England's injury time heartbreak to
France on Sunday evening reduced many fans to tears. For victory in such a high-profile game,
and at that paricular point in the tournament, would 'have given every Englishmen cause for celebration. Frank Lampard's header from David
Beckham's free kick seven minutes before the break sent the whole country into raptures. And even going into injury time at the
d«iY*2Juno,19!45po^ . *■ i
end of the game, we were sitting proudly at the top of Group B. But in two staggering minutes, joy
turned to sheer disbelief as the Three Lions slumped to the bottom of the pile. Tonight England know they simply have
to win when they take on Switzerland. Defeat would see them on an early
plane home and it is difficult to see how a draw would help them.
Elsewhere, the shock of the
tournament so far came on the opening day.
Hosts Portugal were billed as one of the favourites for the entire competition
prior to their match with minnows Greece. But there bubble had burst within seven minutes, after Giorgos Karagounis
FRANK LAMPARD
smashed the ball past Ricardo in the Portugal goal. A second from the penalty spot saw
Greece in the ascendancy, and even a last minute header from Manchester United's Cristiano Ronaldo couldn't stop them recording their first ever win at a major championships. That shock was almost equalled in the
second of the Group A fixtures. But within seconds of entering the
play, Spanish substitute Juan Carlos Valeron scored the only goal of the game to extinguish Russia's flame. But who would have thought Greece
with former Claret frontman Dimi Papadopoulos among their ranks - would
top the group after game one? Group C could see the surprise
-package of the tournament, in the shape of England coach Sven Goran Eriksson's homeland. Sweden equalled the biggest ever
winning margin at the Finals stage after thumping Bulgaria 5-0 in Lisbon. The scoreline failed to reflect the play,
as Bulgaria more than played their part and were well on top for much of the first half. But a brace from former Celtic star
Henrik Larsson and one from Arsenal's Freddie Ljungberg contributed to them occupying top spot in Group C. Meanwhile, Italy - many people's
favourites for the tournament - had a disappointing opening day. They were held to a goalless draw by
Denmark, who could have even snatched victory. Aston Villa stopper Thomas Sorenson
was in inspired form for the Danes with numerous top notch saves. And Italy were lucky to end the game
with n men, after a horror challenge from Francesco Totti on Bo Henriksen only brought him a yellow card. Championship newcomer and
minnows Latvia almost followed Greece's lead on day four with a shock victory. But after taking the lead against the
might of the Czech Republic through Maris Verpakovskis, second half strikes from Milan Baros and Marek Heinz spared the Czech blushes. However, one of the ties of the first
round of matches was saved until last. And the phrase that often conjures up
from big tournaments arose once more - never write off the Germans! A Thorsten Brings free kick sailed
straight in, and looked to have given the 1996 winners the points. That was until that man Ruud van
Nistelrooy popped up five minutes from time to snatch what could prove to be a crucial point.
