HARRY POTTER AND THE PRISONER OF AZKABAN (PG); The Grand Cinema; from tomorrow

HELD for a third week and still pulling in the crowds, Harry Potter has certainly cast a spell on Clitheroe cin ema-goers. His latest big screen

adventure, “Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azka- ban”, sees Harry and his friends become teenagers as they embark on their third, year at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. As if the usual teenage tri als weren’t enough to cope with, Harry learns th a t

feared wizard Sirius Black has escaped from Azkaban prison. Black is widely believed

responsible for the death of Harry’s parents - a trau matic event th a t Harry begins to piece together in a series of flashbacks. Now, with Black on the loose, Harry’s o\vn life could be in danger, but once again all is not at it seems in his magi cal world. J.K. Rowling’s phenome

nally successful books appeal to young and old alike and the films share th a t universal appeal. Despite being set in a fan tasy world, they also tackle some of the everyday issues tha t young people face in real life.

equivalent of a safe pair of hands. One of our most prolific dramatists, he consis tently produces scripts that are cleverly constructed and very funny. In “Game P lan ”, Lynette Saxon

(Yvonne O’Grady), a woman whose hus band has run off with her best friend, is struggling to come to terms with her new poverty after her “dotcom” company crashes. Her teenage daughter Sorel (Katherine

Heath) has a plan to help raise some money by using thie Internet to select “clients”, hence the pun in the title. To help her conceal this plan from her mother and to act as her maid, she

coerces her best friend, Kelly (Alyson Coote) into assisting. But everything does not go to plan. The f irs t a c t ends with a dramatic

flourish and the plot thickens consider ably and une.xpectedly in the second. Heath and Coote are hilarious and

believable as the teenagers and O’Grady adapts to her changing maternal role. She also opens the play with a wonder

ful smoker’s cough that has the audience laughing even before anything has been said. They are well-supported by Da\nd Peart, Kieron Jecchinis, Laura Richmond and Leigh Symonds, but to reveal what parts they play would be to spoil the sur prises. The stage design by Sarah Williamson

(and H abita t!) is effective and Chris Honer directs with his accustomed skill to bring out all the farcical elements and witty dialogue.
