MORE than 30 members of Clitheroe Naturalists visited the Silverdale area. Their walk began at

Leighton Moss RSPB Reserve and continued by Red Bridge, the Gait Barrow Nature Reserve area, Yealand Hall Allotment, Cringlebarrow Wood, and Leighton Hall grounds and by the public causeway of Leighton Moss back to the starting point, six miles in all. The group observed 85

species of wild flowers, a near record, and there was a splen did display of birdseye prim rose, a relative rarity, by the Haweswater meadow near Gait Barrow. Nearby, another rarity today,

was ragged robin. In another meadow on the route were

delights of Silverdale heart-warming displays of com moner meadow flowers in glori ous June bloom and, as a bonus, several species of orchids and yellow rattle, not often seen in our fields. Not many unusual birds were

seen, but a garden warbler and the summer visitor, the willow warbler, were heard singing. Black-headed gulls were nest ing on the small islands in full near view from the public hide at Leighton Moss. The outing finished as all

good outings do with cups of tea and ice cream. The next coach outing to the

Abbbeystead area will leave Clitheroe Interchange at 9-30 a.m. on June 19th. Booking is essential and can be made by telephoning Mrs Christine Pickles on 01200 425190.

Mobile zoo is a hands-on hit!

THE thought of being near a snake might be horrifying for a lot of people, but for a group of Ribble Valley children, it was an experience of a lifetime. Around 25 youngsters, aged between four and 12, were in for a real treat when a mobile zoo visited Clitheroe’s Roefield Leisure Centre. The visit, which was part of

the centre’s spring break play scheme, saw the children having an “hands-on” session with

frogs, lizards, hawks and snakes. Speaking on the visit, organ

iser Louise Thompson, said: “All the children had a fantastic time and were not frightened of touching or holding the crea tures. “John Makinson, who is in

charge of the mobile zoo, worked very well with all the youngsters and taught them how to hold snakes and how to get rid of animal phobias they may have.”
