r e s id e n t s a t Manor House Nursing. Home, Chatbum, were treated to a “Stars in Your Eyes”-style summer special. Members of staff roped in

their friends and relatives to produce a two-hour long extravaganza. I t opened with summer songs, includ ing the Cliff Richard hit "Summer Holiday". This was followed with acts from Sonny and Cher imperson ators, an acrobatic display, an old-time singalong and Hawaiian dancing. A 20ft. stage backdrop

was produced especially for the show by one of the home’s carers, Miss Carrie

Walker, of Downham, with

help from members of her family. The nursing home’s man

ager, Mrs Janet Harrison, commented: “The staff real ly were excellent. I thinh they’re getting quite used to performing, as this was their third show. “The residents had a they can’t wait

great time -

until the next one.” A total of £200 was raised

from the show and this will go towards the home’s com munity bus fund. Our picture shows some of

those who took part in the entertainment. (T070804/1)

How parents can help prepare for the A-level results

AUGUST only means one thing to many teenagers and their parents - exam results. Those results are looming, and that means

potential worry and stress for the whole family. But what can parents do to ease that stress,

both for themselves and their children - and to reassure their children that life goes on, whatever the results are? ChildLine, the children and young people’s helpline, gets calls every year from teenagers wor ried as results day approaches, or distraught after they have got their grades. Hazel Norbury, superviser at ChildLine, says:

“They’re worried about what results they might get. They don’t want to let their parents down

, because it means so much to them, sometimes more than it means to the children.”

ADVERTISING FEATURE She says it is often the high-achievers who are

most worried about getting Bs instead of As, for example, and missing out on university places after A-levels. “There’s incredible pressure on kids at this

time,” she says, “and parents need to prepare them by telling them that whatever the results are, they’ll cope. “They need to talk to them about the worst-.

case scenario beforehand, look at all the options if the results are bad, and prepare themselves and their child for the worst. “If the worst happens, the kids feel like it’s the end of the world and they need to talk about it.

and express how awful they feel to their parents, or to us.” And even when the worst does not happen,

there can stiU be misery. “We get calls from kids that have done

extremely well and are unhappy because they don’t want to go where their parents want them to. Parents need to ask themselves if what is planned after the results is what their kids want, or just what they want.” Educational psychologist Michael Duke says

the key to dealing with the stress of exam results is keeping everything in perspective. “Parents should help the child to have realistic

expectations,” he stresses. “And whatever they achieve, if they’ve given.it their best shot and ful filled their potential, that should be celebrated as

much as a 10 A* result would be. But if there’s a suggestion the child is going to under-achieve, perhaps because they didn’t revise enough, the parents should sit down and discuss the possibili ty of failure and devise a contingency plan with their child.” Such plans should include contacting local fur

ther education colleges for details of courses, he says, and looking at the possibility of retakes, or finding a job. “If they have a degree of control over what happens next, even if i t ’s not really what they wanted, they’ll feel a bit better. Par ents have to get their child to see that whatever happens, the situation can be turned around. They should be the key to being realistic and pos itive by showing their children the options and helping them make the right choices.”
