SIXTH in the world - that is the position Clitheroe canoeist Jonnie Schofield holds after earning the best internation al result that Great Britain has produced in the last 10 years at the Wild Water World Cup. His success came

after some very gru elling races across Europe that saw him achieve a bronze medal at the Bovec sprint race in Slove nia. The Wild Water

Cup consists of six races, three classic and three sprint, with the best four to count. This year's races

Jonnic Schofield in action (s)

were hosted by Karlovy Vary in the Czech Republic, and Muotathal

in

Switzerland, besides Bovec. But the Slovenian

course is the most difficult and danger ous of them all, as it travels through a narrow gorge to fin ish into Grade Six rapids, where around 10 years ago two ladies in the Italian team tragically lost their lives. These were the

first races after the World Champi onships in Garmisch Partenkirchen, and Schofield found good results right from the start. He finished eighth

at Bovec in the longer classic rac,e and everyone was stunned when he took the bronze. The ex-Clitheroe Royal Grammar

School pupil then fol lowed this up with sixth in the Czech Republic, and fourth in Switzerland to earn overall sixth. An indication of

just how well he per formed is outlined by the fact that he man aged to beat all the other competitors in at least one of the six races, apart from the Sprint World Cham pion. At

present

Schofield is relaxing back in Sawley, but he will soon be trav elling out with the Great Britain team to the Pre-European Championships on the River Chaloux near Dijon, as well as being on hand to help coach the ’junior team a t the Junior Pre-World Champi

onships in Italy at Vipiteno. He will then be

preparing for next year's world cup series to be held in the UK and Ireland, as well as the 2006 Wild Water Racing World Champi onships in Bala, North Wales. At

present

Schofield is spon sored by both Ribble Valley Borough Council and Castle Cement, who have have both helped to improve his interna tional performance, but he is always look ing for added spon sorship. If you are interest

Title-winners confident of bolstering squad by Adrian Capstick

CLITHEROE’S North West Counties First Divi sion championship-winning squad are very much in demand. But Blues chairman David

Burgess is confident that the club will not only keep the side together, but bolster it as they prepare for life in the UniBond First Division. As yet manager Lee

Sculpher has not secured any new faces to his squad

for the forthcoming season, but Burgess confirmed that players have been contacted: “At the the moment we're waiting to hear back from a few high profile players from the UniBond First Division and North West Counties First Division. “I can also say that the

majority of last year's cham pionship winning side have been approached by other clubs from the same stan dard of football that Clitheroe will be playing next

Netball awards

THE end of a busy season for members of Ribble Val-

y ley Netball Club was • ” marked by a presentation night at Chatbum school on Friday. There was a good atten

dance by the girls and their parents with the presenta tion being followed by a disco that was enjoyed by

all. Many of the players were

.—--awarded with plaques, medals and trophies for their effort, attendance, commitment or improve

ment. And special mention was

made of some of the older girls who have been picked to Dlav for England and

Lancashire squads. Following a break in

training over the summer, when some of the younger members will be enjoying a summer school a t Stony- hurst College, the new sea son will start in earnest in September. The club is looking for

ward to competing in the league and tournament fix tures, and is hoping to encourage more boys to take up the sport. This presentation night

was kindly sponsored by local estate agents Ander- ton Bosonnet. The girls are pictured enioving the night. A250604/7

season, but Lee and I feel very confident th a t the majority will stay.” The first team kick-off

their pre-season preparations tonight at Shawbridge. The club are on the look

out for a new physio after Steve McCullough decided to leave the club to further his career. So Burgess is presently in

the hunt for a replacement: “I'm after an individual who is looking to become involved in semi-professional football

and physiotherapy,” said the Blues' Chairman. “They've got to be avail

able on matchdays, which are Saturdays and Tuesday evenings, as well as Thursday evening training sessions.” Meanwhile, with a certain

18-year-old's exploits in Por tugal still remain fresh in everyone’s mind, Burgess has acquired an England shirt signed by Everton's Wayne Rooney to auction off in aid of the town team. At present he has received

an offer of £300 for the shirt that comes with an official letter of authenticity from Everton, but it has a reserve price of £500 on it and will go to the highest bidder at the Community Open Day to be held at the club on Sun day, July 18th. Talking of strips, Clitheroe

have announce dthat the new blue home, and red away shirts will also be unveiled at the open day. The shirts will again fea ture the Castle Cement logo

after Gareth Price, Castle Cement's General Manager for Ribblesdale Works, agreed a new four-year spon sorship deal, with an option al fifth, with the Blues chair man. For more information on

both the physio position and the signed Rooney shirt please ring David Burgess (07730691243). Further details on this event are to follow.
