TO paraphrase the football pundits cur­ rently dominating our TV screens, “Troy” is a film of two halves. One half is lots of spectacular scrapping by chiselled young men sporting armour, leather and muscles. The other half is lots of talking - noble and meaningful talking - by old men sporting togas and surplus chins. In the fighting department, our leg­


endary heroes would win hands down, but in the acting stakes it is the old boys who come out on top. The young guns include Orlando


Bloom as Paris, Eric Bana as Hector, and Brad Pitt as Achilles, whose skimpy san­ dals ultimately prove his downfall. The veterans are drawn from the ranks of Hol­ lywood “royalty” - Brian Cox, Brendan Gleeson and Peter O’Toole. The plot centres on the siege of Troy


after Prince Paris steals away the beauti­ ful Helen (Diane Kruger) from Spartan King, Melanus. This gives Melanus’ brother, Agamemnon, the excuse he has been waiting for to invade Troy. There are some spectacular action


scenes in this “sand ‘n’ sandals” epic, but ultimately it is a stop-start affair, the dia­ logue putting the brakes on the action. If you’re a student of Greek mythology looking for a serious interpretation of Homer’s tragic poem “The Iliad”, you could be disappointed. If, on the other hand, you are a Brad


Pitt fan looking for a rip-roaring, sword­ swinging romp complete with a wooden horse, this is for you.

I DON’T know how well Opera North’s brave experiment to pull in a wider audience is working. By giving two short performances each evening, audiences have the choice of going to one or the other-or both. The format also gives directors David Pountney


and Christopher Alden the opportunity to put on little gems that are not often seen, by Bizet, Rossini, Rachmaninov and others. Leoncavallo’s “Pagliacci” is well-known, but


Kurt Weill’s “Seven Deadly Sins” and Zemlinsky’s “The Dwarf”, less so. I saw Puccini’s “II Tabar- ro” and “de Falla La Vida Breve”. The first is a dark tale off jealousy and murder, the second a dark tale of jealousy and suicide. Nina Pavlovski sings the unfaithful, unhappy


Giorgetta, matched well by Jonathan Summers as her brooding husband. Leonardo Capalbo sings the doomed lover and also the callous lover who betrays the heroine in “La Vida Breve”. Johan Engels’ set for “II Tabarro” is full of


shadows and shafts of light that create an appro­ priate atmosphere of desperation and impending gloom and the music is magnificent. De Falla’s music is also memorable and Engels’


set is a run-down factory where women stitch wedding dresses while the men lounge around. Mary Plazas in the role of Salud is powerful and moving and her death makes a dramatic climax. Opera North returns to the Lowry in the
