32 Clitheroe Advertiser & Times, July 1st, 2004 Jesuit priest says Mass

AN Ethiopian priest visited a Clitheroe church to highlight the importance of campaigning to

end Third World debt. A special Mass was offered at St Michael and

St John’s RC Church on World Debt Day - by Fr Kif le Wansamo SJ. After the service, more than 200 campaign

letters from CAFOD - the Catholic Agency For Overseas Development - were signed by the congregation which have now been sent to the US President and the Chancellor of Germany. The World Bank and the International Mon

etary Fund deemed Ethiopia in need of debt relief - however the US, Germany and Japan are blocking it. The letters from CAFOD were calling on the

politicians not to block the debt relief. “People just need to believe that they can make a difference.”

IT was a perfect summer’s evening, a cloudless sky, bright sunshine and the faintest of breezes for Clitheroe Ramblers’ 500th evening of Wednesday Walks. Setting off from Whitewell,

Liz Walters led the party of 40 across the stepping stones on the River Hodder and then a steady climb onto the flank of New Laund Hill. Here a pause was made to take in the view of the river far below as it flowed through the steeply wooded val ley against the backdrop of Lon- gridge Fell. A gentle descent led to Fair

route turned east to provide more splendid views across to Birkett Fell, with the Dunsop Fells to the North.

MEMBERS of Clitheroe Ram blers’ Association were led on a 12-mile route starting by the bridge in Austwick by Mrs Gill Morpeth. They proceeded across the

fields, south of Oxenber Wood to Feizor, then north round Feizor Wood and west to the hamlet of Wharfe at the foot of Moughton Scar, pausing for a break by a stream. The party followed the old

walled lane right down the east side of Crummock Dale before climbing over the col, having lunch on the way sitting on limestone dints, which made very convenient tables and chairs, to reach Sulber Nick. On the way they saw the early pur ple orchids covering the moor-

Sunshine greets 500th walk At this idyllic spot a stop was

made, home-baked cakes were eaten and a toast was raised to celebrate the milestone occa

sion. Moving on, field footpaths

through Tunstall Ing and New Laund soon brought the party back to the stepping stones and Whitewell, as the sun set behind

the hills. The first Wednesday evening

walk took place on April 30th, 1980. For many people these walks have been the focal point of the week and they have proved very popular over the years. This is the 24th year of the walks, but there were none in 2001 due to the foot and mouth outbreak. More than 17,000 people have

joined the walks and it is esti mated that almost 2,500 miles of footpath have been walked. The Wednesday evening

walks will continue throughout the summer until September 8th. For more information, con tact Ben Brown on 01254 822851.

land. Through Sulber Nick lots , of birdseye primroses and but- terworts were seen before reach- 1 ing Nick Pot. The group trav elled the limestone pavement to Long Scar and directly south down Thwaite Ridge, following a long line of cairns to a stile above Norber Boulders where the party of 17 had a tea break by one of the famous Norber Erratic, of great interest to geologists. This is where hun dreds of huge boulders of dark gritstone stand on pedestals of pale grey limestone, gouged out, carried and deposited by the retreat of the glacier that once filled Crummock Dale. It was a disappointing damp

and drizzly day after a fantastic forecast, but enjoyable.
