AS part of Diabetes Awareness Week, members of the Ribble Valley Diabet ic Support Group held a coffee evening and cake stall, advertised with helium balloons, in Clitheroe Mayor's Parlour. The event was well supported, both
by people with diabetes and members of the public, and raised about £160 - double the amount raised at a similar event three years ago. The speaker at the group’s June
meeting was Sister Helen Loughlane, a dietitian at Blackburn Royal Infir mary, who is known to many of the members. She spoke about diet and diabetes, particularly affecting those who are not insulin dependent. The points she made included cut
ting down on fats, gentle exercise, and a good diet, including fruit and veg etables. One point was that although people may appear to lose weight,
they must not worry if the scales showed they had not lost much. This would be because, with exercise, the muscles had developed more. She was sure people would be pleased with their new shapes. About 40 people - the largest num
ber so far - were present at the meet ing in the Lancashire Young Farmers' Centre, Lincoln Way, Clitheroe. Anyone, whether diabetic or per
haps having a friend or relative with the problem, is very welcome at any of
the meetings. For further details contact the sec
retary, Jean Miller, on 01254 824312. At the next meeting, on July 12th at
7-30 p.m., Dr E. Hindle, from the pathology laboratory at the Infir mary, will speak about what happens with the blood samples, which all dia betics have to have taken regularly.
