www.clitheroetoday.co.uk dedication led to record GCSE results for high school
MONTHS of revision, extra classes and downright nagging paid off for students from a local school, after record-breaking results were highlighted at an awards night.
, Headteacher of Bowland County
High School, Grindleton, Mr Maurice Graham commended the school, at the annual prize giving ceremony last Wednesday, for not only performing top in Lancashire but also in the coun try.
He said: “The school has broken all
academic records. An outstanding achievement of 70% of A*-C grades was achieved by the pupils.” Mr Graham was most significantly
pleased with the specialist status bid, which the school had recently submit ted. Last month, over 300 people including pupils, parents, teachers, governors, ex-pupils and friends of the school supported fund raising in aid of the bid. A magnificent £7,100 was raised,

A LIFE on the ocean waves awaits newlyweds Mark Guiver and Helen Robinson. They both travel the
world on board luxury cruise liners, where Helen works as a dancer and Mark is a retail manager. Their wedding, a t St
James’ Church, Clitheroe, brought friends from around the globe, including Australia, New Zealand, Russia and America. The bride is the daugh
ter of Mr and Mrs David and Mary Robinson, of Victoria Street, Clitheroe, while the bridegroom is the son of Mr Dave Guiver and his late wife, Rachel, of Thundersley, Essex. Given away by her
father, the bride wore a designer two-piece basque and bustled skirt in ivory silk, decorated with silk roses. Her bouquet was of pink and ivory roses with thistles, leaves and gyp- sophila. Senior bridesmaids
Amanda Masters, Jo Dick erson and Holly Wigget wore pink and ivory gowns while the two junior brides maids, the bridegroom’s nieces Katie and Kelsie Roake, wore ivory silk
dresses. The bridegroom wore full Scottish dress with a kilt in the Stewart tartan, as his mother was a Scot. The best man was
Robert Hitchen, who flew in from the Caribbean for the wedding. Groomsmen Paul Robin
son, the bride’s brother, Phillip Walsh and Simon Howarth all wore Scottish dress, while fellow grooms men Lee and Raymond Clarke, the bridegroom’s nephews, wore morning suits. After the service, con
ducted by Rev. Mark Pick ett, the couple were greeted outside the church by a wonderful proclamation from Clitheroe Town Crier Roland Hailwood. A vintage car transport
ed them to a reception at The Moorcock Inn, Waddington, where the table decorations were conch shells collected by the bride in Mexico. The newlyweds were due
to honeymoon in Tunisia and intend to eventually settle in Clitheroe when they finally tire of sailing the seven seas. Picture by Kent Photog raphy, of Chatburn
which meant the necessary sponsorship target was raised on that night. Mr Graham thanked the two par
ents, Mrs Denise Park and Mrs Sharon Turner who organised the event and the PTFA which worked tirelessly throughout the year to raise funds for the bid. An emotional tribute to a disabled
fellow pupil and a school’s welfare assistant was also paid on the night. Mr Graham explained sadly: “No
one can forget the emotional standing ovation given by the whole school when Fiona Johnstone valiantly swam a full length of the pool in the inter society swimming gala. “Similarly, another emotional event
occurred when Mrs Noreen Carr, a Welfare Assistant a t the school, was taken ill and died in the summer.” The head thanked the s taff for
p u tt in g in extraordinary efforts throughout the year helping students achieve the best-ever results. He concluded his speech by referring
to the recent Remembrance service where he represented the school, and at which the minister had referred to the epitaph: “they gave their tomor row, so we could have our today”. Mr Graham firmly believed that the
“tomorrow” was in good hands judg ing by the group of youngsters before him at the awards night. SPECIAL AWARDS
