Heroes’ welcome back from Iraq

by Susan Madigan

M E M O Rvl E S , mementoes and even war wounds - that is what our lads have brought back from Iraq.'1 . .After four, months

Living with the seasons

AUTUMN may be waning - and with it those spectacular shades, russets, reds, golds and daz zling greens - but this is the palette to imitate for the cosiest winter home. After all, our natural instinct at this time of

year is to hibernate and visually we yearn for richness and texture to distract us from the bleak landscape outdoors. So what could be nicer than snuggling up on a rich brown leather sofa, softened by throws and cushions in bur nished golds and reds, in front of a blazing fire? Bonnie Trust Dahan, author of a new book

“Living With The Seasons,” says: “Drawing inspiration from the seasons helps to create a haven that comforts and nurtures you from the inside out. Just as the landscape rests under a blanket of leaves, we too seek spaces where we can nestle in as the days grow shorter. “Colder months call for richer textures and

more layers which are visually attractive as well as practical. We gravitate towards gold, sienna, terracotta and persimmon orange shades. Fabrics with a silky texture and a bit of sheen reflect firelight and warm up rooms.” Expressing a season indoors is a form of per

sonal taste and expression and there are no rules. You can choose merely to add wicker bas kets filled with fir cones, decorative branches in large vases, and some berry red or gold cush ions. However, if winter makes you feel ener gised and you are up to shopping for paint you could make a new statement with a feature wall in deep green or red. Both these shades can look inviting and will give a small room greater depth.

Trust Dahan, is published by Chronicle Books, priced £18.99.

peace-keeping ’ and restoring law;, and order in Basra! 500 sol diers from thelsfrBa.tr1 taliori -the -Queen’s Lancashire Regiment, plus 100 members of the TA, are home safe and well - apart from a few minor stab and shrapnel wounds:, Caught up' in cross

fires, crushing cars with tanks and saving each other’s lives - those are just some of the activi ties the soldiers have faced during the last four months. The troops, including

a handful from the Rib- ble Valley, have worked 18 and 20 hour days in temperatures reaching a staggering 60 degrees Celsius re-establishing law and order, main taining calm and pro viding a safe and secure environment for the ’ Iraqi people to rebuild ' their country. They were given a

heroes’ welcome when they marched proudly through the streets of Preston to applause from more than 1,000 spectators, which included the soldiers’ families, local digni taries and mayors from neighbouring boroughs. The local soldiers all

agreed they were proud of what they had

achieved in the short space of time, but they were all glad to be home. The extreme heat was

the biggest problem for the troops, who were forced to wear helmets and body armour while carrying out their duties. Many of them said they

would never complain about the British weather ever again and would be happy not to see the sun or sand for at least the h'ext couple of months! ; j Clitheroe soldier! Cpl

Sherman Martin said the two hardest things about the tour was missing'his family and the heat. . “It was hard work and

I’m glad to be home.” said the 32-year-old. who now lives at the QLR s base at Catterick, North York shire, with his wife. Julie, and children, seven-year- 1 old Chloe and four-year-old :i Damien. “We were shot at almost

every day. It was frighten ing, but we had to get on

‘Good Beer Guide’ pub couple thank regulars with free bee r

REGULARS at the Swan with Two Necks, Pendleton, were treated to free beer as a thank you for their support in helping licensees Steve and Christine Dilworth’s entry into The Good Beer Guide 2004, for the second year running. In the guide, Mr Dilworth was praised

for the excellent condition in which he keeps his cask ales, usually five different ones at a time. Earlier this year a party of regulars

attended the annual Beer Festival held at Olympia, London, at which local MP Mr Nigel Evans was a judge in the champi-

on beer contest in his capacity as vice chairman of the All Party Beer Group at the House of Commons. Mr Evans joined locals to celebrate the

Swan’s success by tasting a selection of cask ales and enjoying a hot-pot supper. A vote was taken on the evening for the best bitter and the winner was Arizona, from the Phoenix Brewery, Heywood. A raffle raised £130 in aid of The

Heart of Lancashire Appeal. Pictured are Mr Evans, Mr and Mrs

Dilworth and barmaid Mary Lancaster, together with regulars.(s)
