when it was first announced. With a price tag that nestles uncomfortably close to the massively successful X5 and a body shape that resembles an X5 after an over-zealous boil wash, it seemed that the X3 sales were in danger of instant cannibalisation by its big brother. And so it may prove - in the short term

at least. Although BMW claims that the X3 opens up a new segment and offers a more youthful and agile appeal than the performance and refinement-oriented X5, it is doubtful that many but the most ambitious early adopters will buy this rationalisation. The real reason for the X3 lies in the fact that BMW has been rather overtaken of late in the prestige 4x4 sector. Vehicles like the Porsche Cayenne and the

on us? Not a bit of it. At first we were a little worried that we would get the lazier 2.2-litre engine that is now des tined for the US market, but Honda recognised that the banshee 2.0-litre unit was the key selling point of the S2000 here in the UK and has wisely stuck by it.

by Andy Enright The rest of the changes have

addressed a few of the issues that pre vented the S2000 being mentioned in the same breath as cars like the Porsche Boxster and the BMW Z4. Although the S2000 did things that

no other car could do, it also did a few that were not always desirable. “Tail happy” would be an apt description of the original S2000 and even in the hands of experienced pilots, the combi

nation of aggressive rear suspension, spiky power delivery and a rather peppy electric steering system always kept you on your toes. In the wet it crossed the line from challenging to occasionally frightening. The latest car benefits from a number of changes that have gone a significant way to taming the handling. The rear suspension is made a good

deal more pliant with softer springs and dampers and a less rigid anti-roll bar. As well as a set of redesigned alloy wheels, the S2000 benefits from bigger

Bridgestone Potenza tyres and a change in tread pattern from the S-02 to the RE050 design gives a better bal ance between wet and dry perfor mance. The electric power steering is also 7% slower to give a more intuitive feel, the chassis is more rigid than ever to allow the suspension to work opti mally and the software of the ABS sys tem has been improved. The S2000 may be less raw now but

it is undeniably a better car. Now we can all enjoy the S2000’s bark without worrying about its bite.

HE BMW X3 certainly caused quite a few knotted brows, scratched heads and stroked chins

by Andy Enright1

Volkswagen Touareg have opened up per formance and engineering advantages that BMW cannot answer with the X5, hence the need for an all-new model appearing in 2006. With the X5 shifting significantly upmarket, the X3 will mop up the sales of those who want a 4x4 with a blue and white propeller on its bluff bonnet but who are not willing to shell out £60,000. For the time being, at least, the X3 and X5 must coexist in uncomfortably close proximity. Pay close attention and you will spot

where the X3 is not as polished as the X5. The front features a lot of black plastic and the interior never looks or feels quite as “hewn from solid” as the X5. All things are relative, however, and by the standards of the compact 4x4 class, the X3 is the best

there is. That should not be surprising given the prices asked. The range opens at £28,615 for the 192 b.h.p. 2.5i (£29,655 in Sport trim) and the 231 b.h.p. 3.0-litre petrol versions kick off at £32,015 for the SE version. We will have to wait a while longer for the 3.0-litre diesel models, BMW sensibly offering this engine in 204 rather than the X5’s 218b.h.p. power output. The 2.5-litre car is offered with a manual gear box with the option of an automatic while the 3.0-litre petrol version is supplied solely with BMW’s acclaimed six-speed auto transmission. BMW has boxed clever in the way the

motoring” although when confronted with such a wacky visage, most infants would prob ably dive for the duvet. It is certainly a big face, the huge headlamps and pumped-up grille dominating, and it is one to which we are growing extremely accustomed.’’ In throwing the rulebook out of the window, Citroen created a car that is more faithful to its occasionally forgotten tradition as manu facturer of supreme lateral thinking. It is a very different take on the supermini concept: three-door versions for example, will never be made. Instead, that niche is being covered by the little C2 citycar. C3 prices start from £8,895 for the entry-

The dashboard has shades of toned-down Fiat Multipla, the lovely silver-trimmed circular vents appearing to warp the fascia as they bust gently through atop a voluptuous pod housing the stereo and air conditioning con trols. The digital instrumentation is clear and easy to read and has a Saab-style ‘black panel’ that turns all but the most important func tions off if you do not want to be distracted by them at night. More importantly, there are enough bins, cubbies and boxes to make locat ing a carelessly stowed bunch of keys the work of several minutes. ISOFIX child seat mount ing points feature strongly and such is the C3’s family orientation that an optional “Child Pack” is available. No, this is not a lockable trunk that stows problematic sprogs safely in the boot, it is a selection of extras that will hopefully offset just such an outcome. A child safety indicator on the dashboard monitors whether seat-belts have been unclipped while safety locks can be activated or deactivated via a dash-mounted switch. A 12-volt socket at the rear, previously the preserve of MPVs, allows junior to play Gameboys without the ticking time bomb that is a battery failure/high score moment. Aircraft-style trays can be fitted to the back of the front seats with clip-in pen and cup holders and plastic bag hooks. The greatest feature is probably the simplest. A swing down mirror that is usually stowed behind the standard rear view allows you to keep an eye on the offspring without impeding your forward vision too badly.

Engines are usually a Citroen/PSA Group strongpoint and these are no different

The innovation does not stop there. Cit-

roen’s Moduboard system is a load bay divid ing system that helps protect soft items from hard, clean from grubby and prevent bulky objects from racing across the load bay during spirited driving. Clever safety-conscious elec tronic features have been borrowed from the C5 - things such as speed-sensitive intermit-

■ tent wipers with rain sensing activation, haz ard lights that deploy automatically under severe braking as well as (optional) side airbags, ABS with EBD, Emergency Brake Assist and pedestrian safety features. • The egg-like shape suggests almost MPV-

like levels of interior space. Certainly at the front, that is true, with more elbow, head and shoulder-room than any other rival, not sur prising when you consider that this car is wider than some family hatchbacks from the next class up. At the rear, things are a little dif ferent. The three inches in length the C3 loses to a five-door Fiesta shows here in the restrict ed leg room and the head room is not great either. Some compensation is the 305-litre boot, one of the largest in the class. Engines are usually a Citroen/PSA Group strongpoint and those offered here are no different, even if the corporate plan calls for the 70 and 92 b.h.p. 1.4-litre HDi diesel units to be shared, not only with Peugeot’s 206 but Ford’s Fiesta. • The friendly face of motoring? Not if you are a brand manager for a rival manufacturer.
