Work to start oh new
A NEW state-of-the-art skatepark and multi-games area is beginning to take shape in Clitheroe Castle
Grounds. The existing skate park has been a
fantastic success, but has now reached the end of its useful life. The facility, which was runner-up in
the Government's Peter Lawrence Awards, which recognise exceptional community work by young people in memory of the murdered London head teacher, has been targeted by vandals. The skatepark was the brain child of the Activate Partnership. A working group, made up of Trini
ty Community Partnership, Ribble Valley Borough Council, the Lancast er Foundation and local skaters, has
been working on a replacement to pro vide a new facility for future genera tions of skaters, bikers and boarders. A multi-use games area is also being
provided to add to the range of activi ties on offer for young people in the Castle grounds. Work has already started on that part of the scheme which is expected to be ready shortly. Tenders are being sought from spe
cial companies to design the new skatepark, and it is hoped work will start in July. The Lancaster Founda tion is to fund the replacement. The council's leisure and tourism manager, Mr Chris Hughes, and Mr Geoff Jackson, chief executive officer of-the Trinity Community Partner ship which is overseeing the work,

commented: "We are really pleased that the scheme is progressing and will result in a facility which will rival other skateparks across the county. The whole project has taken a good deal of time and effort from everyone concerned and is an example of good partnership working. "There will, however, be a period
where there will not be skating facili ties in
the.park. The current facility is becoming a health and safety risk to its users, and our only course of action is to remove it as soon as possible. "The working group will, however,
look to put a programme of skating events using mobile ramps, to ensure there is some continuity until the new skatepark is built".
