HOW many of the "new breed of investor landlords" are there in the Ribble Valley? The phrase is quite fas
cinating - i t has been coined by a key national figure in a proper ty rental self-help organisa tion. Due to people naturally
keeping their business affairs private, it would take the Spanish Inquisi tion to find out how many people have bought to let locally in recent times. But lots of us know some who have. A proportion of all prop
erties, yes, even in the Rib ble Valley, are let to what the same source describes as "benefit tenents", who, rightly or wrongly, do not seem to be welcomed by neighbours everywhere.
The renters-out are well
aware that there are "anti social tenants" and are pleading that the police, not the landlord, are the people to deal with them. "If the Government
wants to encourage the use of the private rented sec tor to solve housing prob lems, it should not consid er landlords as either 'my brother's keeper' or as part-time, unpaid police men,” say the renters-out. They feel that impracti
cal regulations, including some which have been sug gested by the Govern ment, could damage the sector needlessly, at a time
when it has "made renting socially acceptable once again by bringing good quality housing to the mar ket." Well, that has certain ly happened in the Valley -
just look at some of the gems on offer in our columns! Another cry from the
heart attacks the stories that the buy-to-let-rental market is going off the boil. In fact, there is scope for
more investment, say the renters-out. Specifically bought prop
erties account for only a tenth of the market, they claim.
