ea8tlancsnew8.co.uk ■ | ^ ^ g q g g jg l j Moving problem from
one area to another I UNDERSTAND^that a scheme has been drawn up to improve safety at the A59 Pendle Road junction. '
The proposals are to prevent traffic travel - v ■;
ling from the Skipton direction turning right - into Clitheroe and to restrict carriageway width to prevent overtaking on the junction. . This particular junction seems to have been
designed to cause accidents. There are three aspects of the current
design which concern me. The first is the lack of acceleration and deceleration lanes. Since these are thought necessary at the Pend- leton/Standen Hall junction, which is so light ly used compared with Bendle Road, I find it difficult to understandJWhy they were not incorporated when the junction was "redevel oped" a few years ago. Secondly it has to be recognised that a
minority of motorists are’ confused by the presence of give way signs for both joining the A59 from Pendle Road and for leaving it when coming from the Skipton'direction. In partic ular some entering the main road mistakenly think that they have right of way over those leaving it, or. that they can move into the mid dle and obstruct vehicles trying to turn off. Others leaving the main road dither, not sure whether they have right of way or not. Finally, for vehicles turning right on to the
A59 at busy periods, the basic crossroads design means a frustrating wait for a gap in the traffic in both directions and encourages waiting on the central reservation. The proposal to prevent traffic coming from
the Skipton direction turning right into Clitheroe will undoubtedly prevent many of the minor accidents at this junction. However, one has to ask what will happen to those who normally turn into Clitheroe here. Inevitably there will be an increase in traf
fic through Chatburn and into Clitheroe, par ticularly affecting the inner bypass. This is simply moving the problem from one location to another.
The second proposal, to restrict the width in a few
w.eeks' time. The image by size and
of the carriageway to prevent overtaking a t , quality, especially DVD, is astounding, the junction must, as one of its consequences, ;; By all accounts, we will not let our mem- have the effect of slowing down all following 7b'ers, guests, friends and the general public traffic whenever a vehicle brakes to turn left. . down, and films (admittedly not your current This could be the cause of some rear end. shunts, particularly if the motorist turning off is one of those who does not see the need to indicate when turning left. ' ....... ■It seems to me that the two proposals are a
low-cost cosmetic exercise that will replace' one set of problems with another. There is more than sufficient room for the construction of a proper roundabout, which would solve the : problems and not shift them elsewhere. I t ' would also have the effect of slowing down traffic in both directions - no bad thing.

end. We at the Ribble Film Club had a splendid
time. The attendance for the final night for "Rabbit Proof Fence" took us all by surprise,
with a delayed screening to allow 270 people
to view a thoroughly commendable film. Certainly a record for the Ribble Film Club
and pretty close for a single screening ever. My friends at ATSIC (Aboriginal and Tor
res Straits Islanders Commission) in Canber ra will be delighted that so much of their pro motional material was gladly accepted by the audience as they made their way home. Even the posters have been snapped up for
use in schools, etc. Less well attended was the experiment with video and DVD projection the same after
noon, but "no worries". The important thing is we now know we have a future when cinema ceases (allegedly)
Sadly the lady tripped and fell face down

Could you lend a hand
in this vital work? FOR more than 40 years, both men and

Wheels service. Many of you will no doubt have not considered the need for an effective organisation behind this work, but from time to time the WRVS needs to recruit new vol unteers to replace those who have taken retirement or left the service. I am now appealing to all of you who feel
th a t you could help in this caring and unselfish work. A little of your time could help to retain the independence and dignity of peo ple by helping them in their own homes. It is not only the act of delivering meals that is important, but also the “delivery” of a friend ly face; someone who will check that all is
well. If you feel that you would like to help with
the continuation of this vital voluntary work, whether you live in Clitheroe, Whalley, Lon- gridge or in the villages, your assistance would be very valuable. The amount of your time you give is your decision, anything from a minimum of two hours per month. If you would like to discuss helping, with
out committing yourself, please contact either Eileen Hampshire on 01200 442513 or me on 01200 425863. The rewards are the appreciation of our many recipients.

much-needed facilities WE read with interest the correspondence about X-ray facilities and the outpatients’ department at Clitheroe Community Hospi tal.
Our organisation raises funds for the hospi
tal and the public of Clitheroe and district are most generous, both with donations and money in lieu of flowers at funerals. We thought that people would be interested
to know that some of this money has been used in the X-ray and outpatients' depart ments. Items supplied include furnishings, light fittings etc. for the X-ray waiting area and a "Pat” slide to move patients more easily. When the outpatients was first opened, we provided paediatric weighing scales, a suction machine, trolleys etc. We have also provided many large pieces of
equipment, such as beds, mattresses, televi sions, blood pressure monitors, curtains and many other items for the main hospital. If anyone would like to know more about
our organisation, please contact one of us. We should like to thank the public for its continued support.

on letters were unfair THE writers of last week's letters regarding Slaidbum feel the editor's comments unfair. The paragraph in the article to which we
advantaged, nor indeed are the other villages in the Hodder Valley. There is an excellent .community spirit and social life for those who
took exception was; "There is a real rural dis advantage and now large sums of money are being ploughed in to do something about it." As the letters stated, Slaidburn is not dis

the published letters and the points being made therein. We hope for a favourable response.

Quotes can be found
for most situations IN a book the size of the Bible, it is possible to find obscure quotations which, taken out of context, could be applied to most situations. I have known people "find" the date of the
end of the world, a justification for apartheid and reasons for not travelling on the A666 to
Boltonk, So I am interested to see the BNP support
er, Steven Smith, continuing this tradition of using the Bible to support their own erroneous
ideals. . For of course, Biblical teaching taken as a
whole demands of us to love our neighbour, we care for the stranger in our gate, and thank God Egypt took the Holy Family in as refugees when they were fleeing the wrath of Herod.
JAN ASHTON, Sabden Brook Court, Sabden.
Sorry, Bible passages
did not convince me AS a churchgoer, I was drawn by its promi nent headline to the letter from the Burnley BNP organiser, and was surprised to read that his organisation is more in line with Bib lical teaching than the Church. This is some claim but, to convince sceptics like me, he quoted four passages from the Bible. After studying the prescribed passages in
six different versions of the Bible and having consulted my Bible commentaries, I remain unconvinced that these substantiate Mr Smith’s claim in any way. However, I did .detect that one passage was
out of keeping with the other three, as I am sure Mr Smith will agree when he reads the rest of the chapter. Perhaps this is something he could discuss at the next meeting of his Bible class. I have not read all this correspondence, nor
do I intend to do so in the future, but if Mr Smith will continue to stimulate us with pas sages from scripture I will certainly read his , letters.
