CLITHEROE Wolves Under 14s Blue are hoping to carry on their good form into the new year. The youngsters are more than

half-way through the season and they sit proudly at the top of their respective league. Although other teams have games

in hand, the Wolves have points in the bag, which is just as good if not better. Highlights of the season so far,

include Tom Rutherford’s terrific scoring rate which has seen him score 35 goals in 13 games, including six hat-tricks.

Double victory success for Readstone teams

BOTH Readstone United’s Under 9s and Under 11s sides celebrated a double success over the festive period. The Under nines first beat

Oswaldtwistle Juniors 1-0, with J. Mar tin on target, and M. Cox man of the match. ■ And their next victims were Black

burn Celtic, who they beat by the odd goal in five. Martin was this time joined on the scoresheet by M.Shirtcliffe and T.

Astin-Kilgallon, with Cox again the star man.

A brace from the outstanding S.

Wixted helped the Under 11s beat Ight- en Leigh 3-1. J. Neary completed the scoring, The pair were again on target in the

6-6 draw with derby rivals Ciitheroe Wolves, with man of the match D. Boys also finding the net.

James Scriven has also been

impressive between the sticks and was picked for the Inter-League side. Other fine performers are Sam

Johns and Nicky Byrne, who are both into double figures in terms of goals, while rock-steady defenders

Chris Blockeel, Martin Lafranceschina and Christian Coppola have contributed much to

the team’s success. The team would like to thank

A.W. Cleaning, of Ciitheroe, and MJB Builders for their continued sponsorship.

Promising start but Dog still waiting for first win

DOG INN manager Simon Kerins is hoping that his side will finally realise its potential in 2003. A promising start to the season has

been followed by seven consecutive defeats, a run which leaves the Whalley side still seeking their first win of the season. Kerins said: “It would be a disaster if

we were to go an entire season without recording a single win. “The fear of such an outcome should

be enough to stir us into action over the next seven games. “The coming weeks will distinguish

the genuine warriors from those lacking the heart and desire for battle.’ “The remaining seven games will

demand ceaseless commitment and self lessness, anything less will result in mas sive disappointment.” Weather permitting, Dog are due to

face Lomax at Memorial Park on Sun day.

CLITHEROE golfer Bob- Harrison has taken over as

■ captain of Wilpshire GC, Blackburn, for 2003. ■The new captain resides on

the Balmoral estate with wife Joyce and daughter Rachel. He is pictured with John Ditchfield (centre), the club

v president for 2003, and play- v ing partner John Savage, the current, president of Black burn Lions.

, • They are on the first tee at

•Wilpshire at the commence- ■ment of the Captain’s Drive-. In competition, held following Harrison’s appointment at the club’s annual meeting, (s)

3 Waddington B . ..9 3 Grand Prix race dates confirmed

THE advent of another New Year sees preparations for the forthcoming East Lancashire Newspapers Pendle and Burnley Grand Prix series hot up.

The series’ 10 races have been des

ignated dates, and the build-up for keen runners can now sta rt in earnest. Runners have to enter nine of the

races to be considered for the overall championship title, and first up, on Friday, May 16th, is the Pinhaw Fell Race, in Earby. The five-mile event is followed a week later by the Burnley Lions 10k,

a two-lap road race. The Burnley Boys’ Club 10k race

is next in line, on Sunday, June 1st, a three-lap event on canal paths and roads. The following Saturday sees the

Kelbrook Fell race, a three-mile run, a precursor to the six-mile Barley Fell race on Friday, June 13th. Race number six, on Sunday, June

22nd, is known to be one of the toughest half-marathons in the coun try - the Hendon Brook 13.5 mile race, run on roads, with testing hills to conquer. After recovering from that event,

next up is the Forbes Pendle Hill Challenge, an 8 mile road race, on Monday, June 30th, followed by the Worsthorne Magnificent 7, on Sun day, August 3rd. The penultimate Grand Prix event

is the 25th anniversary staging of the Lancashire Sports Repairs 6, on Sun day, August 10th, and the series comes to a climax with the Trawden road and cross country race three days later. A presentation evening will then be

held at Barrowford Civic Hall on Fri day, August 29th.

ly- Skipper Gary Simkin an early 3-0 lead,' and won two frames and

there were frame wins each for Paul Hodges, Paul Blackburn and Mark Preston. Simkin said: “It’s been a

disappointing season, but I couldn’t fault the players for effort. “Hopefully we’ll do bet ter next season.”
