“James Bond ■ Die another day”(12A) Grand Cinema, January 17th
AFTER 40 years and in his 20th film, James Bond’s first mission of the new Millennium is one of the best of the series - not sim ply a great Bond movie, but a great action movie. Sexy, funny and spectac
ular from the opening titles, the film is littered with moments that have been resurrected from his previ ous outings, mixed in with outrageous gadgets (like an invisible car) and terrific
stunts. The story begins in the
demilitarised zone between North and South Korea with a spectacular high speed hovercraft chase and continues via Hong Kong to Cuba and London, where Bond meets up with the two ladies who are to play important and differ-

South African show has medieval feel and greatest story
The Mysteries The Lowry, Salford Quays, From January 27th
FOLLOWING the huge success of “The Island” and “Le Cos tume,” The Lowry hosts another South African production during the week beriming January 27th. “The Mysteries” transports
the 14th Century Chester Mira cle plays from medieval Chester to contemporary South Africa. The Lowry, at Salford Quays, is
the only venue in the North West showing “The Mysteries”, after its 2002 West End run at the Queen's Theatre, London, where it received unprecedented critical acclmm and audience reaction. Featuring a supremely ener
getic South African cast of 40, the singers, dancers and storytellers take audiences on a magnificent
journey in the native languages of the company, Xhosa, Zulu, Afrikaans and English. Their vocal strength combines
everything from traditional African to gospel music to opera and jazz using instruments all made from reclamed materials. It is the greatest tale ever told,
and cast members have many tales of their own. The auditions were announced
on a local radio station and attracted South Africans from all walks of life, many of whom had never been in a theatre before. The varied cast is a reflection of their country. They are now practised per
formers, however, and have t^en this searing production all over
the world. They sing and dance their way
through the story from Adam and Eve to the Resurrection.
