Farmer wins a top award for his environment work
A FARMER from the Rib- ble Valley has won a presti gious award for natural improvements on his land. Mr John Alpe, who
farms about 820 acres near Whitewell, has received the NFU North West Farming Excellence Award in the English Nature Farming for Wildlife Category. He has achieved organic
statu s on part of New Laund Farm, has under taken a range of activities to benefit'the environment and i ts wildlife and the heather moorland is classi fied as a site of special sci entific interest. In conjunction with Lan
cashire Wildlife Trust, Mr Alpe has been assisting with an experimental pro ject to try to re-establish native limestone and pas-
tureland flowers'and grass es.
Mr Alpe, (pictured) said:
“I care passionately about maintaining the rural envi ronment and appreciate that farmers have a huge impact on the environment and the countryside.” He described how the wildlife habitat on his land
has been improved at the same time as his commer cial management of the farm, adding: “All the hard work doesn’t stop here. I am planning to create a pond area, intoducing native plants, and planting trees to create a smalll wildlife sanctuary.” . The award means Mr
Alpe goes on to represent the North West in the national final, held on March 13th. A spokesman for the
NFU said that the awards make them all realise how much talent, creativity and sheer hard work is going on in the region’s farming communities. She added that Mr Alpe is a proud example of how dedicated farmers are to food and the countryside, ( s ) ' '

YOUTH-ORIENTATED sports organisations aimed at youngsters in Clitheroe and across the Ribble Valley have netted some extra cash. The Mayor of Clitheroe, Coun;
Mary Robinson, in conjunction with the Dil-Raj Restaurant in Parson Lane, raised £250 during a money making dinner hosted by the eatery.
The funds are to be donated to the
cricket forum and Clitheroe Dolphins, as well as the town’s junior netball and tennis clubs. Twenty-eight people joined Coun.
Robinson at the fund-raiser and she hopes to boost the total made follow ing her “At Home” event which took place this week.
Poor home security encourages burglars
INADEQUATE home security measures con tinue to encourage burglars, say police. They urge people to fit qood quality locks,
not to leave the key in, and ensure that doors and windows are secure at night.
. - Handbags, wallets, car keys and similar
potentially valuable but moveable items should not be left on view in houses. Probably the same burglar, enjoyed a haul
worth several thousand pounds in Pasture- lands Drive, Billington, on Saturday night. Three houses' were entered with very little
force used and two laptop computers - an IBM Thick-Pad and and a Panasonic Tough Book - were stolen as well as a wallet, a hand-, bag, a digital camera and other items. Police are investigating.
